โ€œHi!

My name is Malina and I was born February 4th, 2026 at Groves Hospital! My mommy and daddy were really surprised as I was meant to enter the world February 16th but decided Iโ€™d make my grand entrance at 2:00am in only 2 hours of labour! Iโ€™m so grateful to everyone at Groves and Family Midwifery Care for supporting my mommy in bringing me into the world. Thank you Grand Electric for my teddy and thank you to Bill & Cheryl Rowe & Family for the cozy onesie!โ€

We sat down with Groves Foundation Board Member & Social Worker, Elnor Walsh Jones, to discuss what Black History Month means to her.

Elnor shared;

โ€œFor me, as a person of colour, Black History is not just a month. It is something that I live every day and not something I can set aside after February ends. I would most like to see us work towards a fulsome rendition and education about Black individuals and the many, various ways we have shaped the Canada that we see today.

In my life, I have had unfortunate personal experiences with racism and with medical racism. My experiences have shaped the woman that I am now and motivated me to improve things for others. I now use my platform as a Social Worker to try to improve the landscape of our community for the next generation. I would like for youth today to not experience the same level of racism I did growing up. Using the privilege of my education and my knowledge and experiences in life, I want to improve awareness about Black experiences and anti-Black racism, and, as a result, make things better for those that come next.โ€

Thank you, Elnor, for taking the time to share and educate us.

Welcome Benji ๐Ÿค

โ€œBenji was born at Groves on August 18, 2025, with the support of Guelph Midwives. After his oldest brother surprised us by arriving so quickly at home, we were nervous that we might not make it to Groves in timeโ€”but we did, and we had a wonderful natural delivery. We are so grateful to our midwives, Mitra, Gabrielle, and Natalie as well as all the nurses and staff who made our stay extra special.โ€œ

This February, we join Canadians in celebrating Black History Month 2026: โ€œ30 Years of Black History Month: Honouring Black Brilliance Across Generations โ€” From Nation Builders to Tomorrowโ€™s Visionaries.โ€

We proudly stand in support of recognizing Black excellence in health care and beyond, honouring leaders and changemakers like Dr. Yvette Bonny, Dr. John Douglas Salmon, Dr. Onye Nnorom, and Clotilda Yakimchuk, whose work continues to advance more equitable care for all.

We invite our community to learn more about the lasting impact of Black leaders, past, present, and future.

We were grateful to welcome the team from Hamilton Health Sciences to our hospital this week to support Acute Care of at-Risk Newborns (ACoRN) training for our nursing and professional staff using simulation-based learning.

The ACoRN Education Program emphasizes a systematic approach to the identification and management of babies who are at risk or become unwell in the first hours or days after birth, equipping teams with practical tools and skills that support safe care in a wide range of clinical situations.

Ongoing learning and collaboration are essential to providing high-quality care, and we sincerely thank the Hamilton Health Sciences team for sharing their expertise and support.
