Psychotherapy at One Body Health & Wellness
Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) is a structured form of psychotherapy designed to help people process and heal from distressing life experiences, particularly trauma. EMDR incorporates cognitive processing with somatic (body) awareness to restore a sense of safety and balance in the nervous system.
During EMDR sessions, a therapist guides the client to briefly recall difficult memories while simultaneously engaging in bilateral stimulation—most commonly side-to-side eye movements, but sometimes tapping or auditory cues. This process is thought to help the brain “reprocess” stuck or overwhelming memories so they can be stored in a more adaptive, less emotionally charged way. Unlike some traditional talk therapies, EMDR does not require extensive verbal analysis of the traumatic event, which can make it more accessible for individuals who struggle to articulate their experiences.
EMDR is considered beneficial because it can significantly reduce symptoms of conditions like post-traumatic stress, anxiety, and phobias in a relatively short period of time. By targeting the root memories underlying distress, rather than just managing symptoms, it often leads to lasting emotional relief and improved resilience. Many people report that memories which once felt intense or triggering become more neutral after treatment, allowing them to move forward with greater confidence and stability.
