Fun Funeral Fact Friday....
Why Do People Wear Black to Funerals?

Wearing black to a funeral is a long-standing tradition in many areas of the world, particularly in Canada and the United States. Funerals are usually somber occasions, and wearing black indicates that you’re mourning the loss of someone. It’s also considered a sign of respect for the deceased. Historians believe the tradition of wearing black at funerals dates back to at least the time of the Roman Empire. The ancient Romans would wear a dark toga, known as a toga pulla, to mourn the loss of a loved one. Many of these customs were passed down from English predecessors. Historians note that Queen Victoria was known for wearing black to funerals to show dignity and respect for those in mourning. While black is the traditional colour of mourning in Western nations, many other countries around the world have different customs. In India and China, for example, the traditional colour of mourning is white. Indian Hindus wear white because it’s the colour of purity. Countries throughout Asia and Africa have a wide variety of customary funeral colours. In South Africa and Ghana, red is often worn to funerals. You can also find countries that wear purple (Thailand), yellow (Myanmar), and blue (Iran).

🌿 Meet Wendy! 🌿
Wendy joined the Arbor team this past April at Butler Niagara Funeral Home, and we’re so grateful to have her with us. A graduate of the Funeral Director Program just a year and a half ago, Wendy brings a warm spirit and creative touch.

Before becoming a funeral director, Wendy spent 20 years as a floral designer — and it shows! She’s a proud plant collector (some might say hoarder 😉) with greenery in every room and window of her home. When she’s not caring for families, you can usually find her crafting, creating, or adding a little beauty to the world around her.

Wendy shares her busy, joy-filled home with her husband Mike, their blended family of five teens (ages 13–18), plus two dogs and two cats.

🎉 Please join us in wishing Wendy a very Happy Birthday today! 🎉

Funeral Fun Fact Friday!
What is the difference between a casket and a coffin?

✨ The Subtle Difference Between a Coffin and a Casket ✨

Many people use the words coffin and casket interchangeably, but there’s actually a small — yet meaningful — difference between the two.

🔸 Coffin:
A coffin has a distinctive wider six sided tapered shape. It is wider at the shoulders and narrows at both the head and the feet, following the natural form of the human body. Coffins typically have a removable lid and are often crafted with simpler designs and more traditional materials.

🔸 Casket:
A casket, on the other hand, has a rectangular shape and four sides with more symmetry. Inside, you’ll still notice designated areas for the head and feet, but the overall structure is more uniform. They have a hinged, split lid for viewing and typically feature more detailed craftsmanship and may be made with higher-grade materials, including metals.

If you ever wondered about the difference — now you know. 💐

When the last leaves have fallen and it’s time to pack up our reception patio for the season, there’s always a little hint of sadness. It’s our reminder that winter is on its way. ❄️🍂

But before we know it, the days will grow warmer, the patio will come back to life, and we’ll be setting up once again to enjoy beautiful receptions outdoors. Until then, here’s to cozy seasons and the promise of sunny celebrations ahead. 🌿✨
