The Significance of Cheryl's Story
Cheryl was a cherished member of our community whose life was tragically taken due to intimate partner violence. Her story is a painful reminder of the urgent need for safe havens and dedicated resources for survivors. By joining the Brunch, Bid, and Bowl event, we honor her memory, transforming a heartbreaking loss into meaningful action. Every dollar raised helps support women and children, offering them the chance for a life free from abuse—a future Cheryl deserved and one we strive to ensure for others.

However, the need for safe haven in the Niagara region remains urgent. We are already seeing the tragic reality of domestic violence and femicide in our community. Every extra dollar raised between now and the event goes directly toward ensuring that Birchway Niagara can maintain and expand its critical services, providing more beds, counseling, and transitional support for women and children escaping abuse.

Let's keep the momentum going! Your continued generosity ensures that when a woman and her children take the brave step to leave a dangerous situation, there is a safe, supportive place waiting for them.

Mind-Body Connection: The Movement Reality

Some days, the brain and body just aren't in sync. You know the feeling: the intention is there, but the ex*****on feels a million miles away—even in a familiar Pilates exercise.

And then, there are those other days. Days where the breath meets the movement perfectly, your core automatically engages, and you feel entirely connected, strong, and centered.

That's the beautiful, imperfect reality of movement. Progress isn't linear. The goal of Pilates isn't perfection; it's the continuous practice of showing up, listening to your body, and finding that connection, even when it feels elusive.

Keep coming back to your mat or Reformer. The in-sync days make all the practice worthwhile!

This week's featured exercise is Ab prep.

This is a key technique that is important to master as it works as a precursor to a lot of advanced Pilates exercises like Hundred, Coordination, etc.

Key areas to focus on at the start of this exercise is the head and neck positioning, pelvis and spine alignment, as well as rib cage position on the mat.

Start with a little movement at the base of the skull to nod the chin to the chest and keep that chin nod for the rest of exercise.

The goal is to shorten the space between lower ribs and top of your pelvis.

When you curl up ensure you don't lose the chin nod, that the tailbone stays untucked and the lower back isn't flattening and the bu******ks aren't squeezing.

Try these few mindful adjustments in your next class and let us know if you feel a difference.

Taking a moment for a mental and physical "inventory" transforms your session from a task into a mindful practice.
This isn't just about avoiding injury—it's about maximizing your performance and respecting your body's current needs.

How does my body feel right now? Aches, fatigue, energy level?
What is my intention for this session? Strength, endurance, mobility, stress relief?
Am I listening to what I need today? Do I need to go heavy, or take an active recovery day?

Sometimes that’s an hour Pilates session, sometimes it’s a 10-minute stretch at home! Maybe that 10 minutes was all you had to give today, and that is perfectly okay.

Both are wins.

We often fall into the trap of 'all or nothing.' But true love and respect for your body means recognizing and honoring its capacity on any given day. Did you show up? Did you move with intention? Did you breathe? Then you succeeded.

Give yourself grace and celebrate the movement you did manage, not the workout you didn’t complete.

We need your help!

Intimate partner violence is an epidemic.
Our court system isn't able to do enough to protect women and children.

I lost a very close friend to a violent, brutal and senseless attack. The offender was someone we considered a friend. The betrayal shakes us to our very foundation.

Although a guilty plea was entered, and a life sentence was delivered, the offender still has a right to be eligible for parole in 18 years.

It just doesn't seem like enough. The world and our community has lost the most beautiful, caring and loving woman. If you knew her, you can feel that loss.

So we fight for her. 🙂 And we do our best to ensure that no other woman goes through what she endured. As I said in court yesterday, she wouldn't have had it any other way.

She insisted on supporting groups to fight against intimate partner violence while she was dealing with it at home.

How can you help? My team and I are participating in Birchway Niagara 's Brunch Bid and Bowl on March 7th.
Please consider donating to support those who need to break free of relationships. Give them the hope that there is an option, a chance and safety.
