Glutes or gluteal muscles can become tight after too much sitting, overuse or overexertion.

Did you know that gluteal muscles can be tight and weak or tight and strong?

Weak muscles should not be stretched but determined WHY you feel tight/pain in that area.Gluteal muscles are often neurologically weak and can cause referred pain. As a Fascial Stretch Therapist, I determine what tissue should be stretched and/or strengthened by modifying and performing stretches using different angles to target specific fibers of each gluteal muscle. As this stretch is modified to your body, no movement is performed if you feel uncomfortable or pain.

Did you know that back, hip and knee pain may be due to weakness in your gluteal muscles?

When there is weakness, your body will compress joints to find stability. Piriformis syndrome, for example, occurs when the deep gluteal muscles are tight and pinches the sciatic nerve which causes sciatica and joint compression. Therefore, getting your joints to open up is very important.

Remember, the fascia encompasses the entire body and is a connective tissue that affects ALL parts of the body.

FST focuses on the fascial connections and not individual muscles. Therefore, while you get stretched locally, using diagonal and rotating patterns, all the tissue along the way is getting worked as well activating the weaker muscles and releasing the overactive muscles.

So often people think they should stretch the IT band , read my post on that topic. Booking new clients now 😊

Is it important to stretch the TFL (tensor fasciae latae ) ?? Can we really stretch the IT band??

As the pictures show, the TFL and ITband attach at the hip and go all the way to the outside knee. Tightness in this muscle can compress the hip or the knee joint and reduce joint mobility and flexibility .It can also be seen the close proximity to other muscles as well which will have an impact on them directly or indirectly. For example, due to its proximity to the glutes , the TFL can be overworking when the glutes are weak. The sartorius muscle which attaches in front of the hip , crosses in front of the thigh and down to the inside of the knee can also be weak and cause the TFL to overwork and as a result medial knee pain . However it can be that the TFL is weak and other muscles are overworking because of it. You can still feel tight there !It's never straightforward and simple!

So is it important to know the status of your TFL or we just stretch it???? Well!

If too strong, the TFL will press against the hip and can cause trochanteric bursitis , a very painful condition. Using NKT, neurokinetic therapy ( muscle testing modality) and Fascial stretch therapy I can determine what's the case and activate the weak muscles and release TFL if that's needed. Stretching something that is tight and weak is the last thing you want to do! Feeling tight doesn't mean it needs stretching!

The ITband can get pulled on and cause inflammation of the outer knee, iliotibial band syndrome, unfortunately we can't really stretch the IT band. It has more collagen therefore not very flexible but we can concentrate on the TFL which is the problem!

As a fascial stretch therapist taking care of this muscle it's very important but again nothing works in isolation and many things I have to take into consideration during a stretch session. I have a lot of people that are extremely restricted and have pain in that area .. It takes a few sessions to be able to release it.
