Just because you can see clearly, it doesn’t mean everything’s fine.
Your optometrist can spot early signs of serious health issues, often before you feel a thing.

Eye exams aren’t just about glasses. They’re about catching the stuff you can’t see coming. So don’t wait. Make your eye health part of your regular routine.

Now more than ever people are suffering from digital eye strain. The symptoms of digital eye strain are sore, tired, or burning eyes, watery or dry eyes, headaches, blurred vision and difficulty concentrating.

Here are a few tips to help improve symptoms of digital eye strain:

1. Use the 20-20-20 rule. Take a 20 second break, every 20 minute, and focus on something that is 20 feet away.
2.Maintain a healthy distance from your digital device, ideally your arms length and slightly below eye level.
3. Match the brightness of your screen with the ambient light in the room.
4. If you must alternate between looking at your paperwork and screen, consider holding your paperwork closer to your digital working space.
5. Remember to blink, often and intentionally.
6. Consider wearing anti-glare blue light blocking spectacles.

See your optometrist for a routine assessment to ensure that your ocular health is well and to assess if you require any prescription spectacles. Call us today to schedule your appointment.

Glaucoma is an eye condition that affects the optic nerve. Damage can lead to permanent vision loss or blindness. Glaucoma is often related to high pressure in the eye, but may also be related to narrow angles or inflammation.

Anyone can develop glaucoma!

The following groups are at higher risk of glaucoma:

African Americans over age 40
Anyone over age 60
People with a family history of glaucoma

The alarming reason glaucoma is such a danger to our health is that glaucoma is often diagnosed before there are any symptoms. Nearly 40% of those who are diagnosed with glaucoma were unaware of having it.

A comprehensive dilated eye exam is the only way to catch glaucoma early. Glaucoma requires treatment and close observation. Without intervention, people with glaucoma will slowly lose their peripheral (side) vision. Over time, central (straight-ahead) vision is also affected.

Be on guard for glaucoma, and ensure you and your family members have a comprehensive eye exam.

Myopia (near sightedness) is when close-up objects look clear but distant objects are blurry. Myopia is on the rise in children on a worldwide scale. It is expected that in the year 2050, up to 50% of children will have myopia. This is due to increased indoor activities and screen time especially on handheld devices. Regular and consistant time outdoors is necessary to help offset and balance the effects of myopia progression. Routine eye exams are important to follow refractive changes to ensure children can see their best and that their ocular health is optimal and stable.

We have been overwhelmed by the incredible reception and support we have received for our new optometry clinic in Ridgeway. We are so thankful to everyone who has helped in making Dr. Marlatt’s dream come to fruition.

Our utmost appreciation to Donnie Edwards and Larry Boggio of Boggio Pharmacy for the collaboration and shared vision of community healthcare. We are proud to be working alongside Dr. Jeff Re*****on and Dr. Joseph Fraelic of Niagara South Family Medicine who are now practicing in Ridgeway adjacent to our clinic.

We truly appreciate the ongoing support and leadership of Dr.Patricia Teal, Fort Erie’s foremost eye care professional. Sincere gratitude to Dr. Amber Sheikh and Dr. Christopher McLaughlin of the Niagara Eye Institute, for their compassion and expertise. It is an honour to be part of such an incredible network of eye care professionals, enhancing the health and vision of those within our community.

We are thrilled to share our team has grown to include licensed optician Debbie Kassay, a veteran with over 40 years of expertise fitting and dispensing spectacles.

Lastly, we are pleased to announce that Dr. Bryanna Pinelli OD will be practicing with us starting May 2021. Dr. Pinelli is excited to join our team and to care for our patients with shared values of patient centred eye care with integrity.
