This time of year there is a lot of focus on products and purchases, but Horizon Herbs is also all about plants. This Christmas season there are many plants that are rich in folklore and, of course, medicine.
So let’s focus on a few.
First up is pine. Often used as a Christmas tree, a wreath, and garlands it fills our homes with fresh scent and greenery. As a symbol, some attribute its use to pagan celebrations and others connect its evergreen colour to the eternal life of Christ.
This special tree gives us medicine in its needles, bark, resin and pollen. It is highly aromatic and helps to clear lung infections. Tea made from this tree is antiseptic, anti-inflammatory, and high in Vitamin C which makes it great for fevers, coughs and colds.
Pine essential oil is stimulating, uplifting and cleansing. It has traditionally been used to ward off airborne bacteria, fungus, and infections. Topically it has been used to slow the appearance of aging and promote circulation.
You can find two types of this essential oil at Horizon Herbs; Pine and Scotch Pine. Both contain pinene which give them an earthy resinous scent. Scotch Pine also contains Limonene which makes it a little more fresh and invigorating. Which one is your favourite?
