What Is Glaucoma?

Glaucoma is a group of eye diseases that damage the optic nerve, which is responsible for sending visual information from your eyes to your brain. In many cases, glaucoma is caused by increased pressure inside the eye, but it can also occur even when eye pressure is normal.

Glaucoma is often called the “silent thief of sight” because it typically develops without noticeable symptoms in its early stages. Unfortunately, any vision loss from glaucoma is permanent, which is why early detection and ongoing care are so important.

Tips for Managing and Protecting Your Vision with Glaucoma

👁️ Schedule regular eye exams

💊 Use prescribed eye drops as directed

🕒 Don’t skip follow-up visits

🥗 Maintain a healthy lifestyle

🚭 Avoid smoking

🕶️ Protect your eyes

Let's break this down! Your eyes appear the same size from infancy to adulthood, but that’s only partly true! The cornea—the clear front surface of the eye—reaches almost its adult size by age 2, which makes a baby’s eyes look unusually large. Meanwhile, the rest of the eye continues to grow throughout childhood, helping develop clearer vision and allowing the eye to focus properly as you get older.

A question we are asked all the time, and we are sure you've wondered too - Why Do We Pretest Before Your Eye Exam?

Before you see the optometrist, you’ll go through a few quick pretests—but what are they for?

Pretesting helps us get a baseline of your eye health so your full exam is even more accurate and personalized. 🧠💡

✅ Autorefractor – Gives us an estimate of your prescription
✅ Tonometry – Measures eye pressure to screen for glaucoma
✅ Retinal imaging or OCT – Helps detect early signs of conditions like macular degeneration, diabetes, or retinal issues
✅ Visual field testing – Checks your peripheral vision

These advanced tools help your optometrist spot changes in your eyes before you notice symptoms.

Your eyes are unique—and so is your care. Pretesting is just one of the ways we ensure we’re giving you the most thorough, accurate exam possible.
