Let's break this down! Your eyes appear the same size from infancy to adulthood, but that’s only partly true! The cornea—the clear front surface of the eye—reaches almost its adult size by age 2, which makes a baby’s eyes look unusually large. Meanwhile, the rest of the eye continues to grow throughout childhood, helping develop clearer vision and allowing the eye to focus properly as you get older.

🎨 What Is Color Vision?

Color vision is your eyes’ ability to tell different wavelengths of light apart — which your brain then turns into the colors you see!

Inside the retina are special cells called cones that detect red, green, and blue light. When they work together, you get the full rainbow. 🌈

If one type of cone isn’t working properly, certain colors can look similar or get mixed up — that’s what we call color vision deficiency (often called color blindness).

When you come in for your annual check up, you'll be shown something called the Ishihara Color Vision Test. What are you able to see in the picture below?

Pretesting helps us get a baseline of your eye health so your full exam is even more accurate and personalized. 🧠💡

✅ Autorefractor – Gives us an estimate of your prescription
✅ Tonometry – Measures eye pressure to screen for glaucoma
✅ Retinal imaging or OCT – Helps detect early signs of conditions like macular degeneration, diabetes, or retinal issues
✅ Visual field testing – Checks your peripheral vision

These advanced tools help your optometrist spot changes in your eyes before you notice symptoms.
