Kelly’s story: Thriving at work with Ability NB’s support
When Kelly DeGruchy’s mobility changed, she needed advice so she could keep working.
As a regular user of Ability New Brunswick’s services, she knew the organization would provide the support she needed.
“They are a big wealth of information,” says Kelly. “If I hit a barrier, I call Ability New Brunswick.”
Kelly has Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease, an inherited neurological condition that weakens her legs, hands and feet.
In 2019, she left her job as a medical secretary at the Saint John Regional Hospital and took an administrative assistant position with the public library in uptown Saint John because it would mean less time on her feet.
But walking from her car to the library soon became more difficult from the parking spot she was using.
She asked Ability New Brunswick for guidance and was advised her employer had a duty to accommodate. Kelly says the library worked with her, found a closer parking spot and covered the additional cost.
Ability NB assisted with an ergonomic assessment. That led to a new ergonomic chair, desk, electric stapler, dual computer monitors and moving her printer closer to hand.
Ability New Brunswick not only sourced out the ergonomic assessment, but also helped her find the equipment she needed and the library purchased it for her.
“They helped me with all of that at work,” says Kelly, who uses a walker. “I wouldn’t have been able to afford all of this. I wouldn’t even know where to go to help with funding.”
Away from work, Kelly has used the province’s Vehicle Retrofit Program administered by Ability NB to install a lift in her van to accommodate her mobility scooter. Ability NB also assisted in obtaining funding for a power lift chair.
Although some of the mobility aids she needs are mostly covered by health insurance, the copayments can be a financial burden, says Kelly. Once again, Ability New Brunswick was able to help, finding funding to cover those payments.
By reducing physical and financial barriers, Kelly says she has been able to fulfill her goals.
“I want to be working full time as long as possible.”

Histoire de Kelly : S’épanouir au travail grâce au soutien de Capacité NB
Quand la mobilité de Kelly DeGruchy a diminué, elle a eu besoin de conseils pour pouvoir continuer à travailler.
Utilisatrice régulière des services de Capacité NB, elle savait que l’organisme pourrait lui offrir le soutien dont elle avait besoin.
« C’est une grosse mine d’information, explique Kelly. Si je rencontre un obstacle, j’appelle Capacité NB. »
Kelly est atteinte de la maladie de Charcot-Marie, un trouble neurologique héréditaire qui affaiblit ses jambes, ses mains et ses pieds.
En 2019, elle a quitté son emploi de secrétaire médicale à l’Hôpital régional de Saint John et accepté un poste d’adjointe administrative à la bibliothèque publique du centre-ville de Saint John afin de passer moins de temps debout.
Mais marcher de son stationnement à la bibliothèque est vite devenu plus difficile.
Elle a demandé conseil à Capacité NB, qui l’a informée que son employeur devait fournir des mesures d’adaptation. Kelly raconte que la bibliothèque a travaillé avec elle, lui a trouvé un stationnement plus proche et a couvert les coûts supplémentaires.
De son côté, Capacité NB a organisé une évaluation ergonomique. Elle a donc obtenu un fauteuil et un bureau ergonomiques, une agrafeuse électrique et des écrans d’ordinateur doubles, en plus de faire rapprocher son imprimante.
Capacité NB ne s’est pas contentée d’organiser l’évaluation ergonomique, mais l’a aussi aidée à trouver l’équipement nécessaire, que la bibliothèque lui a ensuite acheté.
« Ils m’ont aidée avec tout ça pour le travail, commente Kelly, qui se déplace avec une marchette. Je n’aurais pas pu me permettre tout ça. Je ne saurais même pas où aller pour trouver du financement. »
En dehors du travail, Kelly a eu recours au Programme de véhicules adaptés provincial, administré par Capacité NB, afin de faire installer une plateforme élévatrice dans sa fourgonnette pour son quadriporteur. Capacité NB l’a également aidée à obtenir du financement pour un fauteuil basculeur électrique.
Bien que son assurance-santé couvre en bonne partie certaines des aides à la mobilité, les quotes-parts peuvent représenter un fardeau financier, selon Kelly. Encore une fois, Capacité NB a pu l’aider en trouvant du financement pour couvrir ces quotes-parts.
En faisant face à moins d’obstacles physiques et financiers, Kelly dit pouvoir atteindre ses objectifs.
« Je veux travailler à temps plein aussi longtemps que possible. »
