Save this for later if you don't have time to dive in right now!

There's a history of mixed opinions on high-impact exercises during pregnancy, ranging from "absolutely not" to "you can do anything."

The sweet spot is likely somewhere in between.

⏩SWIPE for considerations, benefits, keeping your pelvic floor in mind and more.

Decisions about high-impact exercise during pregnancy should be individualized, considering the woman's overall health, symptoms, and stress-relief needs.

All exercise plans should be discussed with obstetric practitioners.

🎉Exercise during pregnancy is just ONE of the many things we can cover in your Birth Prep Appointment!

Others include:
👉 Pelvic floor muscle preparation
👉 Perineal massage technique
👉 Early labour strategies
👉 Push positions
👉 Push techniques

Welcome, Samantha Frenette, PT 🎉
Samantha earned her Bachelor of Science degree (Biology major, Psychology minor) from Mount Allison University in 2010, where she also competed as a varsity basketball student-athlete. She completed her Master of Science in Physiotherapy at Dalhousie
University in 2017 and has since obtained certification in both introductory and advanced vestibular rehabilitation.

Since graduating, Samantha has worked extensively throughout the public healthcare system in Halifax, developing a strong foundation in neurotherapeutics and complex rehabilitation. Her work in acute neurosurgery and outpatient neurology has
provided her with strong clinical skills in treating back pain, hip pain and sacroiliac (SI) joint dysfunction from both acute and chronic perspectives - conditions which often intersect with both neurology and pelvic health concerns.

During her schooling she completed a practicum with the outpatient pediatric neurology team at the IWK in Halifax which sparked her keen interest in furthering her education in pediatric physiotherapy.

After welcoming her daughter, Samantha and her family moved back to her hometown of Fredericton. Her own pregnancy and postpartum experience deepened her appreciation for the overwhelming mental and physical demands of this stage of life and
inspired her to transition her practice toward pelvic and perinatal health. She has obtained
her training in physiotherapy for pelvic floor concerns and is excited to bring her neuro-rehabilitation and orthopedic experience into private practice.

Samantha believes in delivering functional and client-centered treatment programs through exercise and education.

Outside of work, Samantha enjoys hiking with her daughter and husband, running, skiing, and taking on DIY projects at home. Her love of travel and the outdoors has taken her from hiking through the Swiss Alps to spotting wildlife on safari in South Africa.

Samantha is happy to be able to provide full services in English and American Sign-Language.

Did you know that it’s recommended that training intensity (how hard you exercise) and duration (how long you exercise) should only be increased by ~ 10% a week.

Research has demonstrated that increasing training at 10% a week has a reduced risk of injuries and an increased rate of compliance (aka you stick with it!).

Just food for thought when you’re thinking about how to progress your training in the new year. Haven’t run in 6 months? Maybe a 30 minute walk is okay compared to going out and running 5 kms for the first time out.

When you’re exercising using a scale called the rate of perceived exertion (or RPE) scale is helpful. You should aim as if you’re working at a ~4/10, or breathing heavily but able to carry on a conversation.

This is a pretty reliable method to know your cardiovascular exercise is demanding enough for some benefit. Always check with your doc before starting a new exercise program.

Hope this helps!

Is Round Ligament Pain Dangerous?

No — round ligament pain is a functional, mechanical discomfort caused by stretching tissue. It does not harm you or your baby. Still, it can be intense, frustrating, and disruptive to daily activities or sleep.

The good news? It’s very treatable, and most patients get relief quickly with the right support.

How Physiotherapy Helps With Round Ligament Pain

Soft-Tissue Release - Targets tight or protective muscles that often contribute to discomfort in the lower abdomen, hips, and pelvis.

Sacral & Pelvic Range of Motion Techniques - Improves overall pelvic function, helping reduce strain on the ligaments and supporting better movement.

Kinesiology Taping for Pregnancy - Provides support to the belly and pelvis, especially helpful during walking, exercise, or long days on your feet.

Exercises - To help strengthen support around the pelvis and maintain flexibility.

Education - To learn which movements contribute to pain and how to optimize ergonomics.

Most patients report feeling relief within a few visits — sometimes even after the first one.
