Adopt a Grandparent/elder Fredericton

We have a senior couple (both originally from Chipman, looking for assistance with getting two grab bars installed in their bathroom. One needs to go directly above the towel rack by their shower, and one by the toilet. The couple are happy to purchase the grab bars and materials required, but they are unsure what size to purchase. They are on a fixed income. The gentlemen, a retired barber of over 30+ years has limited mobility. The two grab bars being installed would make a big difference for him when it comes to being able to continue enjoying a good quality of life in his own home. His wife, a retired school teacher is doing a wonderful job caring for her husband but this is one thing she cannot tackle on her own. Adopt a Grandparent Elder Fredericton (A.G.E.)

As the holidays approach and we are inundated with messaging about the importance of family, not everyone is excited and enthused. For many, this can be the most difficult time of the year, and a reminder of what they no longer have in their lives, whether that be a family member, spouse, close friend, driving licence or good health. Others are simply far away from family and a social support system.

The FREE public service Adopt a Grandparent Elder Fredericton (A.G.E.) has the unique ability to provide that critical support system and bring fellowship and joy to those who need it the most by pairing caring people of different generations together. All of our volunteers are thoroughly vetted.

Older Fredericton and area residents who may not have family nearby, make a new connection for friendship, support, possibly drives to appointments or even shovelling, tech help or free minor home repairs. Young families without the benefit of an older family member can reap all the benefits a grandparent can bestow. Adult children who have lost parents but miss this connection to experiential wisdom and mentorship are buoyed up by a new friendship with an older generation.

We have a 63 year old on southside who would love a new friend. Afternoon visits would be ideal. She has given back to her community by being first friends with two Syrian families, volunteering at Meals on Wheels and the canteen at Grant Harvey. She loves the Toronto raptors and rarely misses a game. She always cheers for the underdog unless they are playing the raptors. She grew up near Florenceville and enjoyed a career in insurance. We a 67-year old widow in the southside morningate area who needs two or three strong individuals to move a 10’ x 12’ carpet from a car to the house. A couch and love seat will need to be moved so the carpet can be unrolled and then moved back into place. The carpet is very heavy. Payment isvan option. We have an elderly couple who is urgently seeking somebody to install a grab bar in their home. They are also seeking someone to install railings along their stairwell It is a huge safety concern at this point and they have been “stood up” by two carpenters thus far… they are willing to pay for all materials necessary.

They live on the Northside and new to the area from Ontario. The wife is a huge animal lover, especially horses. Her husband is a Veteran (which he is very proud of – he loves to tell stories about his working days...). Fun fact: he had to jump out of a plane many times in the course of his career!
