Today, March 20th, we are celebrating Elderbeary Day! This day honours and celebrates the wisdom, resilience, and contributions of our Elders.

We would like to highlight the support of our Resident Elder, Vincent Simon. Mi’kmaw from Elsipogtog First Nation, he moved to Thunder Bay to work at an addiction treatment centre for Indigenous youth as Executive Director. Vince previously served as Interim CEO for Ksalsuti and has been an integral part of our team, overseeing and supporting all of our projects.

We also highlight Elder Lisa Perley-Dutcher, who has been an amazing supporter of our initiatives. Wolastoqi from Neqotkuk, Lisa worked as a registered nurse for 30 years, making great contributions to Indigenous health services during her career. In recent years, Lisa has worked tirelessly to sustain and strengthen Wolastoqey language as the Director of Kekhimin, a Wolastaqey immersion school. Lisa has provided us guidance and support of the Monoqan Healing Centre project and of Sankew-Pomawsuwikuwam: A peaceful place to live, where she led a beautiful opening ceremony in November 2025.

Ksalsuti is grateful to Vince and Lisa for their on-going contributions to the work we do. We appreciate the knowledge they bring and the positive impact they have in our communities. Happy Elderbeary Day!

March 19th marks Two-Spirit Celebration and Awareness Day! This is a time to honour and understand the experiences and importance of Two-Spirit individuals.
Two-Spirit is a term describing an Indigenous person whose gender encompasses masculine and feminine qualities and exists outside the binary of man and woman. They traditionally hold important roles in Indigenous communities as knowledge keepers, healers, and leaders.
We support and celebrate Two-Spirit people in our communities and encourage all to learn about their rich history and resilience. To learn more, visit: https://humanrights.ca/story/what-two-spirit-part-one-origins

This Sunday, March 1st is Zero Discrimination Day. Developed by the United Nations, this day is an opportunity for awareness about discrimination. Many people experience unjust and harmful treatment because of their race, ethnicity, gender, disability, sexual orientation, and more.
This day highlights the injustices many still face today based on discrimination and stigma. It is necessary to understand, support, and celebrate diversity to combat discrimination. Ksalsuti commits to upholding compassion, inclusivity, and respect for everyone.

Today is Pink Shirt Day! It is a reminder to be kind to one another and stand against bullying in schools, workplaces, at home, and online.

Starting in 2007, a group of students took action and distributed pink shirts because a younger student was being bullied at their school in Nova Scotia.

Pink Shirt Day is a reminder for us to choose kindness and respect every day and bring awareness to bullying.

This Saturday, February 14th, is Have a Heart Day! This youth-led event provides Canadians a chance to come together for the equity of First Nations children regarding their rights and well-being in Canada.

Have a Heart Day emphasizes the need for First Nations children to have access to equitable, quality, and culturally appropriate social services for education, healthcare, and more. This day highlights the ongoing inequalities and barriers to these essential services.

Canadian youth are encouraged to advocate and send Valentine’s cards to their elected officials expressing the importance of this initiative. Go to The First Nations Caring Society’s website to find a letter template and more resources. https://fncaringsociety.com/events/have-heart-day

On this Family Literacy Day, check out Ksalsuti’s Turtle Island Book
Series! These stories are developed to support the social and
emotional wellbeing of children, inspired by the Seven Sacred
Teachings.

Family Literacy Day emphasizes the importance of caregivers joining
children in developing their literacy skills. Literacy is developed
through a variety of activities such as reading, storytelling,
singing, playing word games, and list-making for shopping and chores.

Today, December 6, is the National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence Against Women. On this day, we commemorate the 14 women murdered at the 1989 École Polytechnique massacre. We remember and honour the lives lost, and those affected by gender-based violence.

We honour and pay tribute to those who have served and continue to serve in the Canadian Armed Forces. On November 8th, Indigenous Veterans Day, we remembered First Nations, Metis and Inuit veterans, for their bravery and the many injustices they faced despite their sacrifices. Today, on November 11th, we honour and commemorate the lives of all those who were lost.

Recently, Ksalsuti wished farewell to two of our team members, Brooke and Melanie, as they embarked on a new chapter in their continuing education journey.

Brooke worked with Ksalsuti over the past several years, most recently as our Accounts Administrator and Turtle Island Lead and Melanie supported our team over the past year as a Project Coordinator.

We would like to thank Brooke and Melanie for all their hard work, their joyful presence and the passion they brought to our team. A huge congratulations and wishing them all the very best in their studies. We know they will find success wherever their paths lead!
