Honouring Action on Truth and Reconciliation Day

At Balance Psychology Clinic, we are grateful for the wisdom and guidance of our Indigenous Mental Health Counsellor, Angee Aquin. Angee has been an anchor for our team for many years—keeping us grounded, encouraging us to reflect, and reminding us that reconciliation is not only about today, but about the actions we take every day.

This morning, my own action was to step outside for a walk, reflect. I also connected with our staff about being mindful in our daily practice. One way we continue to learn together is by honouring language—like learning the names of the Wolastoqey communities in their language.

With Angee’s leadership, we are committed to ongoing cultural sensitivity training, consultation, and advocacy—not just on one day, but every day.

We acknowledge that we live and work on the unceded and unsurrendered territory of the Wolastoqiyik, Mi’kmaq, and Peskotomuhkati peoples, whose presence and stewardship continue to this day.

Today, we invite you to also choose one action—big or small—that honours reconciliation in your life.

Red Shoe walk for FASD Fredericton Sept 9th, 2025

Balance Psychology Clinic was able to have some of their team at the walk for FASD to support the Initiative. We brought goodies along with our sharing of information. Angee, our FASD clinic indigenous liaison, was able to give a breakdown of what is happening at our clinic. Also, we shared some of our hopes and dreams.

Balance Clinic’s intention was also to thank the caregivers.

Messages of appreciation were attached to red carnations, which participants could choose to give to their special person. These caregivers make a meaningful difference in the lives of individuals with FASD. It is important to remember that caregivers include parents, guardians, teachers, support workers, mental health practitioners, nurses, and many more.

Thank you to École Les Éclaireurs and Les P’tits Imprimés, a group of students who design with 3D printers. École Les Éclaireurs

They created the red shoe fidgets that we gave out to participants. Our team shared information with them about what FASD is and why the red shoe is its symbol. This was a wonderful community exchange—merci!

Kate Rogers was in attendance and spoke about the City of Fredericton’s Proclamation: “Therefore -I, Kate Rogers, Mayor of the City of Fredericton, do hereby proclaim the month of September 2023 to be FASD Awareness Month in the City of Fredericton.”

From CanFASD:
"This year’s FASD Awareness Month theme,
“Everyone Plays a Part: Take Action!”.
Each of us has a role to play in creating a society that supports individuals with FASD and promotes healthy pregnancies. Small actions lead to big change – whether it’s taking a training session, raising awareness in your community, or having important conversations with loved ones about alcohol-free pregnancies. When we all take action, we build a more inclusive, informed, and supportive society."
