Tracy Horsley, Speech Language Pathologist

Tracy Horsley, Speech Language Pathologist Helping children and adults with speech, language and/or cognitive-communication difficulties. Life is about relationship.

My passion is to help people be confident communicators in the social circles to which they belong – whether at home, at school, at work or at play. My assessment, consultation and therapy services targeting communication and swallowing skills are available to address a wide-range of needs for children and adults as well as their significant others, including improving a child’s speech or language delay/disorder, improving swallowing safety in an adult who had a stroke or who has a progressive neuromuscular/neurodegenerative disease, developing an augmentative or alternative method of communication, helping establish an effective functional system of communication after a stroke, or even helping a student return to a learning environment after a sport-related concussion. Good relationship starts with good communication. The ability to reciprocally share our inward most thoughts, feelings and ideas with others is essential to developing and maintaining quality relationships. When speech, language, or cognitive skills are insufficient to enable us to communicate effectively, we can be deprived of those meaningful connections in our relationships that give us life and define a fully-satisfying human experience. I am dedicated to prioritizing and crafting therapy goals that are personally-tailored to the individual’s needs. I believe therapy must be conducted in a fun, meaningful way that is relevant to the client’s life and everyday interests in order to achieve the highest success. My services are highly contextualized because they are offered in the location of the client’s choice – at home, at school, etc. Call now to learn how my services can help you! Although I offer services to a wide range of clientele, my special areas of interest include:

- Adults who have a progressive neuromuscular disease, or who have had a stroke or a Traumatic Brain Injury

- Students of all ages who are returning to learning after concussion (sport-related, etc.)

To those who know and care about someone with Aphasia!! Here's an excellent article that underscores the importance of treating the "conversational exchange" between people with aphasia and those they engage with by helping Communication Partners (CP) become more effective supports. Essentially, the becomes a ramp, increasing communication access to the person with aphasia:)

Wow! Great, innovative use of higher-tech for speech development for individuals with Apraxia of Speech or Autism! The technology draws on "age-old" speech therapy practice of drawing clients' attention to a speaker's mouth as a way of stimulating and facilitating more accurate speech productions in themselves. I'm thinking this engages our brain's mirror neurons somehow, but who knows for sure??

VALLEJO, Calif. (PRWEB) July 07, 2020 -- Video Assisted Speech Therapy (VAST) is exciting technology for non-verbal individuals with autism and motor planning challenges.

The data is satisfying to my "professional side", but also somewhat disheartening to my mother's heart... I'm sure my choices about my daughters' participation in high-level hockey and soccer for so many years would have been different had I known then what the evidence shows now. 🤔

Even athletes who don't experience concussions but experience repeated jolting impacts to the head can have subtle and cumulative brain damage.

The impact of COVID-19 has made me ponder the significance of communication more deeply than ever. How disconnecting this virus has been to us all! I feel that I have a new appreciation of the isolation so often felt by my clients who journey with a communication impairment and I truly hope this will enable me to better attune to their needs. I believe that "Communication is Essential" because it is fundamental to the establishment and maintenance of all our important relationships.

👋 Looking for your feedback... I was planning on starting-up a Conversation Group for people with Aphasia in the Fredericton area, but COVID-19 has made face-to-face gatherings impossible at this time. I have been using Telepractice (private, secure video conferencing) for quite some time with several of my clients. I'm curious whether there would be any interest in starting a Conversation Group for people with Aphasia and their Conversation Partners using this method of social connection until face-to-face meetings can happen again?

I just finished an amazingly inspiring full week of intensive training at the Aphasia Institute in Toronto. I met many wonderful clinicians, researchers and professors in SLP from all around the globe, and learned so much from them all!! I am deeply grateful for the knowledge, tools, and inspiration I am bringing home with me tomorrow to share with my clients, their families, and all people with Aphasia in the Fredericton community. Many thanks to the members, instructors and staff for this opportunity and passion-fueling experience!!
