The long version
I am a graduate of the Canadian School of Natural Nutrition and a certified member of the CSNN Alumni Association, which makes my designation: R.H.N. (Registered Holistic Nutritionist in Ontario) and C.H.N.C. (Certified Holistic Nutritional Consultant in Quebec). I am also an active member of the Quebec Association of Professional Naturopaths which keeps me accountable to operate according to the very highest standards.
But this wasn’t always my path.
In fact, before health became my passion (both personally and professionally), I was an IT Professional for 20 years. Talk about a change in direction! Here’s how it happened…
My diagnosis
26 years ago, I was diagnosed with ulcerative colitis. I remember sitting in the doctor’s office asking questions about what caused this disease. Answers were vague and unsatisfying. Maybe genetics? Stress? When I brought up the idea of nutrition, it was immediately discounted. I was told to take my medications and everything would be fine.
So I did. And my life was anything BUT fine.
Energy levels were up and down. My pain and discomfort often prevented me from spending time with friends and family. Favourite activities were no longer enjoyed. Moods were low. My illness was isolating me and every aspect of my life was impacted. I became discouraged and worried about my future. How much longer could I continue to work? How would I support my family? My anxiety and distress continued to increase as my colitis persistently flared up, often landing me in the hospital. My life seemed completely out of control and it was as though I had lost a part of myself. Everything I once knew simply wasn’t my reality anymore. Now I was sentenced to medication for the rest of my life and I felt like nothing more than a heap of garbage on even the best of days.
Although the medications kept some of my symptoms under control, I always knew they weren’t the long-term solution. My body would eventually stop responding to the current dose and “med madness” would begin. Relying on medication to control my condition was just a “Band-Aid” solution to mask the underlying cause of my disease, which only enabled me to get my next medical diagnostic and additional prescription drugs. I needed to set myself free.
The better way
Over 15 years ago, I embarked on a mission to eliminate my medications and get my life back!
It wasn’t easy.
There were countless trials and tribulations, hundreds of hours of research and tens of thousands of dollars spent.
And now?
I am, for the first time in over 20 years, symptom-free and…finally thriving again. Through diet, lifestyle and supplements, I’ve taken a hold of my disease. I’m in the driver’s seat and I have the control – not my disease.
My journey hasn’t been short. And it hasn’t been easy. But I’ve learned a whack load! I wish there was someone who could have taught me everything I know today 20 years ago. The truth is, there’s very little help out there for IBD and IBS sufferers. You’re on your own to figure things out for yourself.
That’s why I do what I do.
