Indoor Enrichment Tips ❄️

Cold weather doesn’t have to mean boredom, for dogs or cats. On days when outdoor time is limited, indoor enrichment like food puzzles, snuffle mats, and scent-based games can provide valuable mental stimulation. For cats, activities such as treat puzzles, hide-and-seek toys, and encouraging natural hunting behaviours help keep minds active. These activities can reduce restlessness and boredom while keeping pets happy, calm, and engaged throughout the colder months.

It’s not just people who feel the cold! Pets can develop frostbite as well. Areas with less fur and blood flow, such as ears, tails, and paw pads, are especially vulnerable in freezing temperatures.
Shorter walks, proper winter gear, and a quick paw check after being outside can make a big difference in protecting your pet this winter.

Dr. Ewing will be off for the next 8 weeks as she heads into knee surgery and recovery this week. While we’re definitely going to miss her around the clinic, we know she’ll be back stronger than ever!
Let’s send her all our best wishes for a smooth surgery, lots of rest, and a speedy recovery!

And as always, our dedicated team of doctors and staff will be here to continue providing the exceptional care your pets deserve.

After completing annual bloodwork, we noticed this kitty’s glucose levels were a bit higher than expected.

To help us monitor more closely, we placed a Freestyle Libre continuous glucose monitor.

This allows us to track glucose trends over time with fewer needle pokes, making monitoring easier and less stressful for our patient as we move forward.

Annual bloodwork plays an important role in keeping track of your pet’s health. If it’s your pet’s first time, these results also serve as a valuable baseline to compare against in the future.

💧 Cold weather doesn’t mean hydration stops mattering.

Why winter hydration matters:
• Indoor heating dries out the air
• Cold winter air contains less moisture
• Pets continue to lose fluids through daily activity
• Snow doesn’t replace fresh drinking water

💡Winter reminder:
Offer fresh water daily and watch for changes in your pet’s drinking habits. If you have concerns, our team is always here to help.

Did you know?

Dogs can hear sounds that are too faint for us and at much higher frequencies than humans can. In winter, their sensitive hearing helps them pick up on subtle sounds like crunching snow, distant footsteps, or wildlife moving under the snow.
