When Liz’s son Luke had a severe allergic reaction, it escalated quickly. What began with a rash soon included coughing, stomach pain, and difficulty breathing as his throat began to tighten. Liz rushed him to Georgetown Hospital’s Emergency Department, where the teams acted quickly and with compassion.
In this video, Luke shows us how to use an EpiPen and why knowing the signs of anaphylaxis matters. As students head back to school, Luke's story is an important reminder to act quickly and alway seek emergency care – even if symptoms improve.
A few tips to keep in mind:
✔️Use immediately at first signs of anaphylaxis
✔️Inject into outer thigh (through clothing if needed)
✔️Hold 3 seconds, then remove
✔️Call 911 right away, even if symptoms improve
✔️Carry two if prescribed
✔️Check expiration date regularly
