🌿TRUST YOUR GUT🌿

The gut microbiome is fundamental to who we are as humans. Protecting our microbiota is a crucial way to :

🦠Breakdown food into micronutrients for our bodies to absorb.
🦠Maintain the integrity of the intestinal wall
🦠Assist in metabolic processes, including the regulation of glucose levels in the body
🦠Serves as an antioxidant defence system
🦠Regulates anti-inflammatory functions
🦠Prevent and alleviate allergic diseases such as food allergies

It can then be said, all diseases begin in the gut! A great way to help maintain a healthy microbiome is being mindful about what you eat.

By manipulating the gut microbiota (which make up your microbiome) you can begin loosing weight and prevent obesity!

Maintaining a healthy, colourful, fibrous diet will help you work harmoniously with your microbiota! Here are some daily dietary options that you should keep in mind!

🌿 6-9 cups of veggies per day!
🌿 Fermented foods daily!
🌿 2 servings of fruit, especially blueberries!
🌿 1 cup of beans or legumes
🌿 Nuts and seeds
🌿 The use of olive oils or other good, natural oils (avocado, coconut, etc)
🌿 Fish
🌿 Whole Grains - non processed grain!
🌿 Grass fed beef, organic eggs, ghee (in small amounts)
🌿 40g of Fiber per day

〰️THE MENTAL HEALTH BENEFITS OF HAVING A DAILY ROUTINE 〰️




As a Naturopathic Doctor, I know the importance of daily routine on both our physical and mental health. Routine helps us maintain balance in both the sympathetic (fight or flight) and parasympathetic (rest and digest) nervous systems. Routine also helps to balance our hormones, especially cortisol (stress hormone). Everyday my constant is to to schedule a walk in nature for about an hour. I feel rejuvenated and relaxed after my walk and it helps me to deal with the stress of the rest of the day. As well, I have been trying to maintain a sleep schedule of 10pm to 6am which really helps to balance my cortisol levels. I find by maintaining a daily routine, I have more resilience to maintain balance throughout the day. Focus on 1 or 2 things that you can do to create your daily routine such as sleep, exercise, meditation, healthy eating, creative time, music or whatever speaks to you! Following a basic daily routine will definitely help to anchor you and improve your resiliency in this time of uncertainty.

At the Georgetown Naturopathic Wellness Center, we want to stay connected with our patients and create a community of empowerment during this difficult time.

We know the COVID-19 pandemic may be causing feelings of anxiety, uncertainty, and loneliness, BUT it’s important to remember that we all have a choice in how we respond to this crisis. Of course, it goes without saying that we all must do our part in following the recommendations set out by the Public Health Agency of Canada (PHAC):

* Wash your hands
* Practice social distancing
* Work from home if you can
* Don’t touch your face

BUT while doing your part to help “flatten the curve”, REMEMBER TO TAKE TIME FOR YOUR MENTAL HEALTH AS WELL. We may not know how long we will need to maintain our social distancing practices, but we can make the best of it by implementing a few daily activities that will help ease our minds.

* Call/FaceTime a friend or family member
* Move your body (many yoga studios and gyms are doing free online classes!)
* Read a book
* Watch that movie you’ve been meaning to watch
* Get back to a hobby you haven’t had the time for
* Journal

… The list goes on, but ONE OF THE BEST WAYS to nourish your mind and body is by getting outside for a walk in nature (while of course practicing your social distancing 😉 ). Walking in nature is not only a great way to get some exercise, but it has also been proven to help ease anxiety and boost the immune system (read the article linked in our bio for more info).
