Remembrance Day
Today, we pause to pay tribute to and commemorate all individuals who have served and made sacrifices in times of war, conflict, and peacekeeping. We don the poppy as a symbol of appreciation and contemplation — for the valour, fortitude, and selflessness exhibited by countless individuals.
As we reflect, it is essential to acknowledge the contributions of Indigenous veterans, whose service and sacrifices were frequently overlooked. Many Indigenous soldiers served with distinction, despite encountering discrimination in their homeland. Their bravery extended beyond the battlefield — their languages became potent instruments of protection and strategy. During both World Wars, Indigenous languages, including Cree, Ojibwe, and Navajo, were utilised as code languages to securely transmit vital messages — codes that the enemy could not decipher.
Today, we commemorate all who served, from every background and community, united in their dedication to peace and freedom. Lest we forget. 🕊️🌺
