After more than 50 years on Queen West, Steve’s Music is closing its Toronto retail store. The legendary shop at Queen and Spadina will shut down as part of a broader restructuring that also affects locations in Ottawa and Montreal.
The company says it’s facing mounting financial pressure and disruption in the retail sector, prompting an in-store liquidation sale of up to 50 percent off before closures roll out over the coming months. Only the flagship Montreal location on Saint Catherine Street is expected to remain open, while online sales will continue.
Founded in 1965, Steve’s became a staple during Toronto’s punk and indie music boom in the 1970s. Its closure marks the end of an era for Queen West’s music scene.
