We are so fortunate to have a Mammography Unit in Huron County at the Alexandra Marine & General Hospital. We have an excellent team that manage the unit as well. We are so blessed.
When we think of mammograms, we think of breast cancer detection, but mammograms can sometimes reveal another important health clue: your heart health. One test can provide insights into two of the biggest health threats women face, but that’s only if women are given the information.
During a routine mammogram, radiologists may notice calcium deposits in the arteries of the breast. This is known as breast arterial calcification (BAC). It can be an early indicator of cardiovascular disease, the leading cause of death for women.
Studies have found that women with BAC are more likely to develop heart disease, stroke, or other vascular conditions later in life, even if they have no symptoms or traditional risk factors. This makes BAC a valuable early warning sign, one that could allow for preventive action long before heart disease becomes apparent.
Unfortunately, BAC is not routinely reported on mammogram results in Canada at this time, even though the information is visible on the image. That’s why it’s worth asking the technologist, “Can the radiologist please include whether my mammogram showed breast arterial calcifications?”
You may not always get an answer because radiologists currently have no guidelines for reporting BAC, but the more women who ask, the more likely it is that change will come.
We’ve seen this before. Before 2018, no woman in Canada was told her breast density category. Today, that information is shared because women spoke up.
Our health. Our lives. Our right to know. Please ask.
