Why an Urban Healing Lodge is Important

It is a place where we can gather any day of the week.
To connect. To belong. To remember who we are.
To hold ceremony. To heal. To come together.

Right now, we wait for events.
We wait for permission.
But our healing should not depend on that.

Every religion has a place to pray.
Every culture has somewhere to gather.

But what about us?
What about Indigenous people of this land?
Where do we go in the city to pray?
To smudge? To sit with family?

Why are our powwows pushed to the edges
beside police stations or outside city limits?
Why must we pay huge costs to host our sacred events?
Why are we still asking for space,
instead of having places already rooted in our urban communities?

Research shows that identity and belonging are vital for healing. Yet we continue to rely on temporary solutions.

Where is the prevention? Where is the permanence?

We should not have to wait until next year.
We deserve a place to pray, gather, and heal every day.

This is why an Urban Healing Lodge is important.

On August 14th, EaglesPath Healing Society was grateful to join community leaders, service organizations, and businesses for the Hope Hub Launch in Grande Prairie.

Director, Shauna Livesey, was honoured to be welcomed as a speaker at this meaningful event, sharing the importance of connection, culture, and healing in building strong families.

Together, we signed the 100 Families Declaration, committing to walk alongside families with care, compassion, and community spirit.

What a wonderful weekend at our Women & Girls Healing Retreat. We gathered in circle, shared stories, and reconnected with the land, ourselves, and one another. 💛🌿 From laughter to tears, teachings to quiet reflection, this retreat was a reminder of the strength, beauty, and medicine we carry as women and girls.

A heartfelt thank you to our facilitators, Elders, Knowledge Keepers, and all the women and girls who joined us. Your presence made this gathering so powerful and full of love. 🌸🔥

Not all Indigenous people grew up in abusive homes. Many were raised with love, belonging, culture, and warmth. While trauma may exist in their family lines, some found the strength within themselves to break cycles and build something better.
