Sarah Kelades, our SLP, had the honour of presenting at the COHI Aide Conference in Edmonton last week on “The Mouth–Speech Connection: Why Oral Health Matters for Communication.”
COHI (Children’s Oral Health Initiative) supports oral health for First Nations children, with a strong focus on prevention.
Sarah values strong interdisciplinary teamwork—especially between dentistry and speech‑language pathology, to support kids in a holistic, collaborative way. Early intervention is a shared belief for both the COHI program and SLPs! 👄 🦷 🗣️

A new title has been unlocked 🔓 No longer will we be called ‘Speech’ or ‘Speech Teacher’, we will now be referred to as ‘Speecher’! Nothing is more perfect than that, well other than the creator of the term. Thank you JRA! 😘

Orofacial Myofunctional Disorders Workshop with the incredible Linda D’Onofrio.
This wasn’t just a weekend of professional development—it was a transformative experience. The knowledge I gained will fundamentally shift how I approach my work as an SLP. From assessment to intervention, I feel empowered, informed, and excited to bring this insight into my practice.

Grateful for the opportunity, the guidance, and the community of learners who made this weekend unforgettable.
And as a bonus? I got to reconnect with my amazing colleagues from the University of Alberta’s 2012 Speech-Language Pathology graduating class—what a full-circle moment!

🎓 That’s a wrap on another unforgettable year with the amazing K4 & K5 students and staff at Horse Lake First Nation! Grateful for the continued privilege to support such an amazing school community.

Huge shoutout to our incredible SLPAs—Janis, Kyra, and Tiana—who not only joined the grad celebration in their beautiful ribbon skirts 🧵 handmade by local community members, but also poured their hearts 💖 into supporting students all year long. 👏 Your dedication will make a lasting impact!

And that’s a RaP! This week Sarah & Janis co-facilitated a Reading and Play (RaP) summer camp for the children of Sturgeon Lake Cree Nation. They were joined by team lead - Colleen (Inclusive Ed Consultant extraordinaire) and Renelle (the remarkable GP Head Start leader). It was a sunny 🌞 fun filled learning week for both the camp leaders and children. We are so grateful to be a part of the community’s summer programming for the kids! We will be joining the community again for a Speech & Language camp later this summer! ☀️

World Book Day! Here are a few favourites for repetitive text. Repetitive text books gives children lots of chances to hear the same word/s and provides opportunities for them to jump in! These listed books specifically, have simple repetitive words that are suitable for children with severe speech sound disorders and/or childhood apraxia of speech. What makes a suitable word? - words that are simple in their syllable shape and have less complex phonemes (consonants and vowels). These types of books help teach verbal imitation with their repetitiveness and simple words.
