Body image is how we view ourself externally. And where does this perspective come from? Usually, adults in our life such as caregivers, teachers, coaches ect. Children are sponges, and take in what people say. There is a misconception that the media is the largest influence on body image and self esteem; the media just happens to be where young people turn to validate what they hear in the environment.

So what can we do to promote a healthy body image? Stop negatively talking about our own and others’ bodies. Some bodies are smaller, some larger, and many in between. Every body is beautiful when we recognize that a body is just a body. An amazing amalgamation of muscles and organs that helps us move, dance, celebrate, play, and take in the world ✨

What is birth trauma?

Anything that happens during labor and deliver that damages the nervous system. Of course, labor and delivery can be scary and anxiety provoking, but it isn’t guaranteed to be traumatic. What one person deems traumatic, another may not. And that is why no one gets to determine if a birthing experience was traumatic, other than the birth giver who endured it.

This type of trauma can be activated:

During menstruation
During sexual in*******se
During pelvic examinations
Hearing others’ birth stories
When thinking about having another baby

One of the ways we can process this trauma without ever talking about it, and decreasing risk of re-traumatization, is through Accelerated Resolution Therapy (ART). Feel free to reach out if you’d like to learn more about eye movement therapy, and how it differs from talk therapy.

The Four Horseman of the Apocalypse comes from the Gottman Method. The Gottmans conducted decades of research on over 3000 couples to predict problems in a relationship, as well as how to resolve them. According to their research, these 4 behaviours are the worst that can take place and are likely going to lead to separation or misery.

Contempt: The single worst behaviour to occur. Contempt is about the body language and may look like eye rolling, head shaking, scowling, ect. This is a harmful way to communicate without words.

Criticism: Generally starts with a ā€œyouā€ statement followed by always or never. This one points blame and targets one person.

Stonewalling: Shutdown, silent treatment, turning away, and preventing communication without explicitly requesting a break to cool down and come back together later.

Defensiveness: This sounds like the lack of accountability, making excuses or deflection, which can be perceived as invalidation.

If one or more of these behaviours takes place in your relationship it doesn’t mean it’s doomed, but that now may be a good time for intervention.

As a disclaimer, this is meant for non-violent couples. If domestic violence is taking place, we CAN’T engage in couples therapy. Please reach out if you are needing resources.

I love this quote from David Kessler. It is an important reminder what we need to FEEL to heal. This is an interesting concept because sometimes when I ask someone what an event felt like, they may say ā€œit felt like ____ was out to get me.ā€ At this point in going to pump the breaks, because that isn’t a feeling.

When asked about feelings we need to label an actual feelings word!

Why is this so important? Because the better we are at accurately labeling what is going on in our body, the better the processing, and the faster we heal. If we are continuously ignoring or misattributing what is going on in our body, the longer the deregulation. Our brains are about 80% bottom-up, meaning information is received by the body first, then the brain.

Our brain really is an incredible organ and we have more control than we think. So the next time you feel somewhat dysregulated, I challenge you to label what could be going on in your body with a proper feelings word, and then see what happens next. šŸ’
