Public Health Sudbury & Districts is warning of heavier sedation in recent drug poisonings (overdoses) in the Sudbury and Manitoulin districts.

The cause of the increase in sedation is unknown. This serves as an important reminder that street drugs may be cut or mixed with substances such as benzos (benzodiazepines), xylazine, medetomidine, fentanyl, or carfentanil. Be cautious if using drugs and please share this information widely to help save lives.

Move the person to a safe place, ideally somewhere warm and dry.
Stay with them and keep an eye on them.
Check that limbs are not restricted.
If they are having trouble breathing or not breathing, give rescue breaths.
How to prevent poisonings
A poisoning occurs when a person uses a substance, and their body cannot handle its effects. A person can pass out, stop breathing, or experience a seizure. Poisonings can be fatal or non-fatal.

Carry a naloxone kit. It can help reverse an opioid poisoning.

Avoid mixing substances. This includes alcohol, prescription, over the counter, and street drugs.
Start with a lower dose and go slow.
Avoid using drugs when you are alone.
Have a trusted person nearby or use a virtual safe consumption service like the National Overdose Response Service at 1.888.688.6677 or the Brave App. These services provide 24/7 confidential and nonjudgmental support, whenever and wherever you use drugs.

Different substances affect the body in different ways. Depending on the type of substance consumed, symptoms of a poisoning may look different.

🧡 Every Child Matters 🧡
Today, we honour the children who never came home, the Survivors of residential schools, and the strength of Indigenous communities.

Some of us are here because they survived.
Their stories carry pain, resilience, and truth — and we must carry them forward.

We commit to listening, learning, and walking the path of truth and reconciliation together.

Gakina awiiya 🧡 Kîyânaw nîtôtêmak 🧡 We are all one.

On behalf of Northwood Recovery, Recovery North, and Simcoe Recovery, we honour this day with reflection, respect, and a commitment to healing.

Let us remember, reflect, and rise — for the children, for the future. 🧡

As Recovery Month comes to a close, we stand united in strength, hope, and gratitude. 💜

Throughout September, we’ve celebrated the power of recovery — the courage of individuals, the compassion of communities, and the tireless work of organizations like Recovery North, Simcoe Recovery, and Northwood Recovery.

But recovery doesn't end with a calendar month. Every day, we continue walking beside those on their journey — offering support, dignity, and a reminder that recovery is possible, and it is worth it.

Thank you to everyone who shared their story, offered a hand, or took a brave step forward this month. Let’s carry this momentum with us all year long.

Together, we recover. 💪💚

Drug Alert: Regina - Thu. September 25, 2025

Cannabis purchased from an unregulated source tested positive for fentanyl and benzodiazepine.

The dried cannabis flower had blue-white powder/chunks on it.

-Naloxone can reverse the effects of fentanyl but NOT benzodiazepines
-Combining opioids like fentanyl with benzos increases the risk of complex overdose and death.
-The risk is even higher for people who have no opioid tolerance.

🚨 Increased Risk of Overdose in the Porcupine Health Unit Area 🚨

The Porcupine Health Unit is warning residents about an increased risk of drug overdose in our region. Substances in the local drug supply may be stronger or contaminated with highly toxic opioids like fentanyl or carfentanil — even when not expected.
Your safety matters. If you or someone you know uses substances, please take extra care.

✅ Harm Reduction Tips:
Never use alone – if you must, use a trusted buddy system or call a virtual overdose prevention line.
Start low and go slow – test a small amount first.
Avoid mixing drugs – especially opioids with alcohol or benzodiazepines.

Have naloxone ready – and know how to use it.
Call 911 immediately if someone shows signs of overdose: slow breathing, blue lips, unresponsiveness.

📍 Get Your FREE Naloxone Kit

Naloxone can reverse the effects of an opioid overdose and save a life. Pick up a free kit today at your local Porcupine Health Unit office. No ID, no judgment.
