How can we make our office conditions easier on our eyes? Consider the following:
• When using a device (computer, tablet, phone), take a 20-second break every 20 minutes and look at something 20 feet away. This is called the 20-20-20 rule. This will give your eyes a much-needed rest and help prevent headaches, dry eyes and other symptoms of eye strain. If you can, take an even longer break.
• To prevent dry eyes, make sure that you’re frequently blinking. Blinking helps keep your eyes moist and prevents dry eyes.
• Keep screens 20-26 inches away from your face, and just below eye level
• Yellow-tinted eyeglasses can also help prevent eyestrain. These glasses block blue light and help increase contrast to reduce eye strain.
• Have regular eye exams to ensure that you are using the most accurate Rx if you wear glasses.

Workplace eye wellness isn’t just meant for construction and other similar professions, it’s just as relevant in other settings, like offices, classrooms, etc. Office work is visually demanding and requires good lighting for maximum comfort and productivity. "Good" lighting means providing enough illumination so that people can see printed, handwritten or displayed documents clearly but are not blinded by excessively high light levels (a cause of glare). Poor lighting affects not only the ocular system but can also contribute to stiff necks and aches in shoulder area. These problems can occur when people adopt poor or awkward postures when trying to read something under poor lighting conditions. How’s the lighting where you work?

To be able to keep your eyes safe on the job, know the hazards and make sure that you choose the right type of eye protection. Safety glasses, goggles, or a full face shield are your best bets for eye protection, but be sure to inspect your gear regularly, and ensure that your worksite has at least one emergency eye wash station. Even with the most astute precautions, accidents can still happen.

It takes less than a minute to don safety eyewear – and a millisecond to do permanent damage without them. According to the Canadian National Institute for the Blind, over 700 Canadian workers sustain eye injuries resulting in lost time and/or temporary or permanent vision loss every day. Simply using the proper eye protection on the job could prevent 90% of these eye injuries from occurring.

Ever wonder how your optometrist checks for AMD? It’s a relatively simple test. your doctor will give you some eye drops to dilate (widen) your pupil and then check your eyes for AMD and other eye problems. Your doctor may also recommend doing a test called optical coherence tomography (OCT). In an OCT test, your eye doctor will take pictures of the inside of your eye with a special machine.
