It was after the birth of their own children that the passion for supporting women through labour was ignited for these two friends.
Meg Davey founded Sudbury Doula Services back in 2014 after she completed her Doula Certification through DONA International. Inspired by experiencing having a doula present for her birth first hand, Emily Lamb knew that she wanted to join Meg on the path to supporting women in the Sudbury area. Together, they are offering a unique experience for their clients. They are offering themselves. Instead of practicing like the traditional doula who works alone, these ladies offer clients each of their unique experiences and knowledge. They do their prenatal appointments together so that clients have the opportunity to get to know both doulas and build relationships. This way, clients are not only comfortable with who attends their birth, but they get to know their back up doula as well. They originally came to this idea by being cared for by midwives themselves for the births of their children. They found that getting to know a team of primary care providers really benefited them in their pregnancy. They wanted to give that same comfort to their clients. Both doulas have had very different experiences during the births of their children. Meg was induced for all three of her children, resulting in a Caesarean with her first, and two VBACs (Vaginal Birth After Caesarean) one of which was an assisted delivery. Emily was induced for both of her children as well and had the experience of an easier induction with her first followed by a much more intense experience with her second. Both doulas breastfed their babies and have had to troubleshoot different issues, giving them a great deal of experience and the means to support moms who hope to breastfeed as well. The list goes on, but they truly feel that offering a unique two-for-the-price-of-one doula experience will give their clients a fantastic opportunity to learn, grow, and feel empowered during pregnancy, labour, and the transition into parenthood.
