Small steps every day matter more than big changes all at once.

Mental wellness is not about being perfect or always feeling good. It is about learning what supports you and building habits that help you cope, grow, and stay connected.

Small steps can look like:
• reaching out to someone you trust
• getting outside for fresh air
• attending an appointment or group
• practicing a coping skill
• setting one realistic goal for the day

Progress in recovery is not linear. Some days feel easier than others, and that is normal. What matters is continuing forward, one step at a time.

Support, community, and access to care make those steps possible. No one has to do it alone.

Stress, anxiety, and unresolved trauma do not just affect how we feel. They impact our hearts, immune systems, and ability to cope day to day.

At Monarch, we take a whole-person approach to care, supporting mental wellness as a key part of long-term recovery and overall wellbeing.

Small steps matter. Support matters. Mental wellness matters.

The number one thing you must remember is that you must stay strong against your addiction. You’ve made the decision to stop, take comfort in that. Don’t listen to anyone who tells you that it’s “no big deal” and that you can have “just one drink.”

For many of us, that’s simply not true and no family member or awkward situation is worth risking your sobriety. You know yourself better than anyone else, so be realistic. If being around family for the holidays is just too risky this year, don’t do it. It is absolutely okay not to visit family for the holidays. If you do though, it’s okay to leave early and to treat yourself afterward.

Uncertain about the office holiday party because you know your boss is going to push you to have “just one drink”? Struggling with sitting through a dysfunctional family dinner? Dreading coming face-to-face with an abusive ex at an annual gathering. If you are concerned that a situation is going to put your sobriety at serious risk, this may be the year to skip it. Your sobriety is top priority; therefore, it is absolutely acceptable to not attend events that may compromise your well-being.

A big strategy for dealing with family over the holidays is not only to have that backup plan but to also have an exit strategy. You can't always predict how a situation will play out or how you will feel. Having an exit strategy for potentially stressful holiday situations is essential.
No matter what, it can be important to exit early from family gatherings during the holidays because it’s late at night when people can reach for that extra drink and things can get unpleasant. If your family is the type to drink openly in front of you, then this is particularly crucial. Make sure you know you have a safe way to get home before you even get there so you aren’t endangering yourself and your sobriety.

Don’t let yourself spend too much time sitting around and chatting with your friends and family members. Because most often, this sitting around can involve or lead to drinking. This year, plan some more engaging activities. Get outside for some ice skating or sledding with the family. Build a gingerbread house or play holiday games, volunteer to do the dishes, the possibilities are endless. Helping keeps your hands busy and lets you avoid just sitting around and watching family drink.

You may want to join in on the holiday festivities, but at the same time feel concerned about getting carried away. Being surrounded by others who are drinking, and possibly encouraging you to drink as well, can be immensely triggering and dangerous to your sobriety.
Having a supportive friend, family member or sponsor who can help you to celebrate sober can help you have fun and finish out the night without a drink. Discuss your concerns ahead of time and make concrete plans for how you will both respond if you find yourself slipping. Bringing someone who understands your sobriety and can help you hold yourself accountable can make you feel stronger and more supported.
