The road to full function!

After an injury or a surgery we need to re-strengthen the affected tissue. Using the stages of healing, and degrees of tissue injury as a guideline we can test your tissues ability and see how much healing has taken place since the time of injury.

Stages of healing
- Acute stage is from 4-6 days post injury
- Sub acute can range from 14 days - 21 days post injury
- Chronic can be 6 months to 1+ year post injury

The main goal is to start strengthening within the late acute stage (pain dependent) and into the sub acute stage, this allows you to slowly bring strength back throughout recovery. Letting your injured tissue stay in a weakened state for too long it can lead to prolonged pain and reduced movement.

Every persons ability to heal is slightly different due to many factors like age, other conditions, previous injury, surgeries etc. Talk to your registered health care professionals to come up with a guided plan to return you to full function.

Wait arn’t these knots ??

Trigger points are commonly referred to as knots, but they are more than that. Our muscles aren’t actually able to knot up, but they do contract and when that happens in a small portion of the muscle we get trigger points. They reside in taut bands of musculoskeletal tissue.

Your RMT will use 1 of 2 ischemic compression techniques to help reduce the TrP along with manual or passive stretching and heat!

The best home care for trigger points is to use a heat source over the affected tissue for 5-10 minutes followed by movement. Whether that is stretching or running through full ranges of motion.

Do’s and Don’ts of Home care

Home care can be a vital part in recovery from injury and dysfunction.
When it comes to doing exercise (strength or stretch) there are a few concepts that are non negotiable.

- Breathing is a key, you don’t want to be holding your breathe for prolonged periods of movement.

- Rushing into or out of a movement, this can cause further damage to the muscles or supporting structures.

- Loading on weights or resistance to try and progress faster, working outside of your limits can be risky and can cause a relapse in recovery.

- Skipping rest periods between sets or exercises, home care is about getting muscles back to full strength or full length. Overworking can hinder your bodies ability to maintain proper form throughout the entire workout.

Who is massage meant for ?
EVERYONE!!!

There are different ways massage can help every person no matter the possible conditions you may have. We take precautions when needed and have been educated on a large variety of conditions.

Techniques, positioning on the table, pressure and length of treatments may need to be modified to your your needs. It will always be in your best interest and these things will always be discussed before we begin the treatment.

If you have any questions about modifications for your treatment, please let me know!

TOS VS Carpal Tunnel

One of these conditions are often the cause of numbness/tingling and weakness into the wrist and hand. They are both common syndromes seen in practice and can be helped by massage therapy.

The 2 main differences between the conditions are the origin, and the nerve being compressed. They both are nerve compression syndromes that have symptoms in similar areas.

Carpal tunnel syndrome is a compression of the median nerve as it passes under the carpal tunnel in the wrist. The symptoms of numbness and tingling follow the nerve distribution of the lateral fingers (thumb, pointer and middle and half of the ring). One main distinguishing factor is the Nocturnal symptoms - often keeping people awake.

Thoracic Outlet Syndrome is compression of the brachial plexus in through the neck, chest area. Muscle or bone compression can both be cause depending on the person. The symptoms are in the medial fingers (pinky and the inner half of the ring finger). Often symptoms arise with shoulder or neck movements.

Have any of these symptoms? Come in to the clinic and I can do an assessment for you to rule in or out the possible cause !

If this is your first massage with me, there are some focus points that I maintain in my practice that you should know about.

I run my practice with client focused care, putting you’re best interests first always. It’s welcoming to all wanting or needing Massage Therapy and is a safe, confidential, judgment free place.

You are in control always! You have the final say in treatment plans, what you wear for treatment, areas treated, pressure of techniques, etc. I want you to be comfortable with all aspects of what takes place during a treatment. An open dialogue is always happening to make sure you are comfortable throughout the treatment.

I hope this gives you some insight on how I run my practice, if you have any other questions don’t hesitate to ask!
