We all know the signs that our stomachs give when it is not happy, what about when they are? How do you know that you are actually digesting your food properly?

💩 Your bowel movements are regular and relatively predictable.

🥗 There is no undigested food in your stool except for corn and whole seeds (if they were not pre-ground i.e. flax seeds)

😬 Cramping is not a good sign. It usually means that things are trying to work their way out quicker than your stomach would naturally like or it is a sign of excessive gas built up in your intestines

📉 Your energy crashing in the midafternoon is a sign that you are not properly absorbing your foods and your body is absorbing more sugars that it can handle

How did you score? 4/4?

Let's be real

It sucks being bloated after every meal. It also sucks looking like you are 6 months pregnant by the end of the day. Definitely not how I want to spend my evening.

Over the years I have tried almost everything to get my bloating under control. The big things that helped were supporting my microbiome and minimizing food sensitivities, but I found there were a few simple daily habits that made a tremendous difference no matter how balanced or upset by stomach was.

A note from today’s patients.

“You can’t pour from an empty cup”

As the world is starting up again and we are leaving our houses more and spending more time with people, make sure you are also filling your cup.

Going out, working back in person, spending kids to school can all be very draining on a good day. Let alone know.

I have noticed a theme this week or worry, anxiety, and burnout in almost every patient. So I encourage you to enjoy your weekend and try to fit something in that recharges you so that you can approach next week as best you can.

Maybe that’s a nap. Or a walk. Or baking. Or binging Netflix. Or working out.

Whatever it is, try to get it in. And schedule it in for next week too while you are at it 😉

So what can you do to prevent hair loss?

Protein. If you think you are eating enough, chances you aren’t eating enough. From experience the only people eating enough protein are competitive or non-competitive athletes who track their macros. Do you have to eat as much as they do? No it is all relative to your body size and activity level.

Omega-3s. There is some pretty interesting research here with omega-3s. Basically they nourish the hair follicle and they prevent inflammation which can lead to hair loss

Iron. Iron carries oxygen to the hair follicle which produce the energy it needs for hair to grow

B vitamins. B vitamins, just like iron, improve the health of your red blood cells, or the oxygen rich blood cells. This helps with oxygen delivery to the follicle to promote growth

Other helpful foods/nutrients are: collagen, water, cruciferous vegetables, nuts and seeds, and biotin.

Thursdays are my day off or as I like to call it “life admin day”. Usually I’m in leggings and an oversized hoodie and my hair is full of dry shampoo and up in a messy bun.

Today I am taking things slow, I might get a few items on the to-do list done, but I am not pushing it. Today is all about recharging my batteries.

What do you do on your “off” days to fill your cup? Let me know in the comments below

So I have a confession to make.

I put my hair extensions this weekend, agin (thanks for sewing them in)

I have lost a lot of hair, and while my hair is normally pretty thick, it was starting to look straggly, fuzzy, and overall unhealthy. So I bought hair extensions. This brought some volume back along with length (my hair has never been this long!!!)

Why am I losing all my hair?

Well, I think it is safe to say that 2020 was a stressful year. And I stopped being diligent with my supplements, particularly my iron. My food sensitivities started sneaking back into my diet and flaring my IBS.

At the beginning of March, I started to actually put my health first and I started making some changes in my life to address these issues. I made a habit tracker, I started my supplements, I started meal prepping (sort of) and eating more smoothies, I turn my email off on the weekends.

I am starting to notice changes already (SO MANY BABY HAIRS), but the extensions were a way for me to feel confident and comfortable again while everything grows back in.

I’m curious, what changes have you noticed during the last year?

Losing your hair is scary. It’s also annoying if you are vacuuming it up all the time. If you are losing more than you typically do at this time of year it is time to look deeper into your health.

There are some key lab tests that I often recommend when investigating hair loss.

Ferritin and Complete Blood Count
Vitamin B12
GI-MAP - yup gut health is super important for hair growth
Cortisol
Thyroid panel

With these tests it is important to look at functional or optimal ranges and not just the reference ranges. Normal doesn’t always equal optimal or healthy.

If any of these are abnormal or not optimal, ask why? Why is your thyroid not functioning optimally, why is your ferritin or Vitamin b12 low? It is important to address the root of the problem so that you don’t keep losing your hair or so that it doesn’t come back in 6 months.

One of the chief causes of constipation is lack of water.

So consider this your reminder to drink at least half your body weight in oz of water (not coffee), water.

Hey hey✋
We have SO many new faces here so I thought I’d reintroduce myself and get to know you all a little better.

I’m Dr. Meaghan and I am a Naturopathic Doctor and Nutritionist. I became a ND because I struggled with IBS, hormonal imbalances, and acne as a teenager and into my 20s. (who else thought acne was just an early teen thing?)

In the past several years, I’ve been able to help people reverse their IBS, decrease their bloating, fix their hormones, and overcome burnout. I have seen hundreds of patients and the most common concern I see is IBS. It comes up in over 60% of the patients I see. I am so proud of how far my patients have come! Cleaning up your diet and working on your health is not easy. The patients that I have helped, honestly, they are inspirational! 🙌

On a personal note, I am an INFJ (the advocate). I love to read (currently reading Reset, Living a Grace Paced Life in a Burnout culture), run, and drink tea (I buy it in from a wholesaler that’s how serious I am)😝

You can expect to see more on IBS, hormone balancing, and optimizing energy from me on here, and I also share more over on Instagram .

I ’d love to find out a little more about you too, let me know what you do and something interesting about you below? 👇

Did you know that constipation can worsen your PMS

I am going to guess that your answer is no.

Constipation can lead to an increase in something called Enterohepatic circulation. This is the process where your liver dumps toxins, drugs, or hormones that have been detoxified into your bowels, but since your bowels are not moving often enough, those toxins, drugs, or hormones can get reabsorbed into your bloodstream.

Yeah. Not fun. This is the most common cause of Estrogen Dominance that I see. It is not a case of your body producing too much, or your liver not detoxing it. It is stemming from sluggish bowels (no hormone connection)

This is why improving gut health ALWAYS has to be the first step. Because it can make or break a lot of hormone balancing protocols.

Send me a DM if your hormones are “off” and you have no idea where to start. I would love to point you in the right direction
