May is Maternal Mental Health Month and at 10:30am Saturday May 2nd, at Hanlon Creek Park in Guelph, members of the Guelph community will be walking together to raise funds and awareness for perinatal mental health at Guelph’s 3rd annual Flora’s Walk event. We are proud to support this event.
Flora’s walk is Canada’s largest perinatal mental health fundraiser taking place in over 50 cities in Canada. This event is SO important as it calls attention to the need for improved perinatal mental health care. Flora’s Walk is named after Canadian mother, Flora, who tragically lost her life in 2022 to undetected, undiagnosed and untreated postpartum psychosis. We walk to honour Flora and all those who have lost their lives to perinatal mental illness and fight for those struggling to receive care.
Perinatal refers to the time period spanning pregnancy to one year postpartum and beyond. 1 in 5 mothers, and 1 in 10 fathers struggle with perinatal mental health issues during that time, including prenatal and/or postpartum depression, anxiety, obsessive-compulsive disorder, post-traumatic stress disorder, panic disorder, bipolar disorder, and psychosis. Unfortunately, less than 15% of these people receive treatment in Canada.
This year, funding is planned to go directly to our community through funding mental health counselling programs at Guelph’s Michael House Pregnancy and Parenting Support Services and providing additional Perinatal Mental Health training for their counselling team.
