Micaela Zettel - Physiotherapist To me, an athlete is anyone who uses their body for movement or sport. So yes, that’s you! However you choose to identify, I support you.

Empowering females in health, sport & fitness

🎙 host Through Instil Physio, She Moves, and the herBody Podcast I offer physiotherapy and education tailored to the female athlete and call this Female Sports Medicine. Females have unique needs and physiology, which must be understood and incor

porated into their training and rehabilitation. I aim to teach female athletes of all ages and stages about their bodies and how to recover from injury, reducing the impact of these injuries. I also encourage performance care, which is a great way to minimize injury risk and optimize your movement for sport and life. I believe that by arming athletes with the tools and knowledge to understand and work with their bodies, that I can help them to reach their full potential, whatever that means to them. My ultimate goal is to advance females in sport and create lifelong athletic participation. My role is to provide updated information, training and rehabilitation for female athletes so that they can reach their full athletic potential at any stage of their life. I strive to create an environment to support and empower you in your health and sport performance goals. If you:
- Are an aspiring young athlete who wants to aim big with your sport goals
- Enjoy movement and exercise at any age
- Are pregnant and dealing with an injury that is preventing you from being active
- Are postpartum and you want to return to sport and/or fitness safely and effectively
- Are peri/menopausal dealing with injuries impacting your quality of life
- Have a movement or sport goal that you want help with

I invite you to join our community of girls and women in sport.

*And yes, I do also work with male athletes from amateur to professional.

*I use ‘female’ to describe the physiology that is unique to an individual who has been assigned female at birth (AFAB). Mission statement: Empowering females in their health and sport performance through physiotherapy and education. Vision: Accessible Knowledge | Innovative Approach | Empowered Community.

This was so cool.

No music on this reel - just the sound of history being made.

I love it.

I don’t need to say how cool this is… BUT I WILL ANYWAYS!! My daughter gets to see it, so she’ll know she can be it. Honestly makes me cry just thinking about that.

Thank you - what an incredible moment for women’s sport.

Huge congrats to on the championship, and thank you to both teams (looking at you too, .toronto) for a thrilling match… even with the lightning delay. ⚡️💙⚽️

Feels like a good time to re-introduce myself to you all 🙂

I am Micaela, and I wear lots of hats, actually. I love hats. I also like to stick my tongue out for pictures because who wants to be serious ALL THE TIME? Not me.

I’m the founder of Instil Physio, a practice dedicated to supporting female athletes and active women & girls, which might be why you are following me on this account. I’m also a lot more than “just a physio”.

I’m a mom (and I love it), an athlete, an entrepreneur, a fan of women’s sports (especially beach volleyball, cannot get enough), an advocate for women’s health and female athlete health, a traveler, a hiker, a runner (just getting this one back wooooohooo), a backcountry camper, an exerciser, a health enthusiast (this doesn’t mean all I do is “cleanses’’ and drink green juices → I don’t do any of these), a baker (learning the art of bread making this year), a coffee drinker (duh), and a partner. I care deeply about the people around me, my health, the environment and the state of the world. Traveling and exploring the world with my family is my favourite way to spend my time and money. .

I LOVE sharing information. If I know something that could help you, I will share it. Might be annoying but it comes from a place of genuine care and desire for you to be everything you want in this life. Sounds cheesy, but I promise you, it’s why I do what I do. We all get to be here and I myself want to make the most of it, and also want you to make the most of it too.

Oh and, it’s no secret that keeping girls and women in sports is good for everyone, everywhere, so I’m here doing the things to help support this.

Thanks for coming along for the ride.

Something is better than nothing.

Pelvic floor dysfunction (PFD) and pain is a known barrier to sport and exercise participation in female athletes and active women, and it affects their quality of life and work productivity.

As health pros, we have a role in supporting females with PFD and pelvic pain using non-internal approaches that are complementary to pelvic health physiotherapy, and conventional treatment.

Acupuncture and electro-acupuncture (EA) are modalities that have proven benefits to support rehabilitation of females with PFD and pelvic pain.

This continuing education course provides the knowledge and skills needed to use acupuncture/EA as an adjunct treatment for PFD, including pelvic pain, in female athletes and active women.

Now available online on demand 🙌🏻.

It’s not just about the kegel!

Your pelvic floor is part of your core.

Its function is influenced by many things including posture, breathing and movement (how you move affects how you use your core and vice versa).

Just doing kegels is not the answer.

Learn how to first connect to your pelvic floor (hint: this also means connecting with your breath). Then, learn to coordinate with movement, and then 💥 put it into day to day movement and exercise. This is how I teach clients to connect to their core, whether they are youth, pre/postpartum, pregnant, and throughout life.

You are more likely to get an ACL injury if you are a female, true, but why? We don’t know exactly why yet (1).

I’m tired of the narrative that estrogen is to blame for ACL injuries.

Check out this post for a snap shot of some of what we do know about hormones and injuries, specifically ACL tears.

What you can do, and a few thoughts to ponder 😉.
