Salt therapy, also known as halotherapy, is a treatment that utilizes salt to promote respiratory health in both humans and animals, including horses.
What is Salt Therapy?
Salt therapy involves inhaling a dry salt aerosol. In settings designed for this purpose, such as salt rooms or salt caves (in our case a trailer), the air is infused with tiny dry salt particles. These particles have therapeutic properties that can help clear mucus, reduce inflammation, and kill bacteria in the respiratory system.
Benefits for Equine Respiratory Health
๐Reduction of Inflammation: Salt has anti-inflammatory properties that can help reduce inflammation in the airways of horses. This is particularly beneficial for horses with conditions such as heaves (recurrent airway obstruction) and other inflammatory respiratory issues.
๐Mucus Clearance: Halotherapy can help to thin mucus secretions, making it easier for horses to expel mucus from their lungs. This can improve airflow and overall respiratory efficiency.
๐Antimicrobial Effects: Salt has natural antibacterial and antifungal properties, which can help to reduce the presence of harmful pathogens in the respiratory tract. This is crucial in preventing respiratory infections.
๐Improved Breathing: Many horse owners report improved breathing and decreased wheezing or coughing in their animals after salt therapy. This support can be especially advantageous for working or performance horses
