Today we honour Nicholas Lambden's Angel Day. 🪽
Nick's sister, Madison, and mom, Susan, co-founded The Nightingale Centre in 2019 in his memory. On this day 19 years ago, Nicholas lost his life in a tragic accident at the age of 10 after he was hit in the head with a puck while playing hockey at an outdoor skating rink.

Within the Lambden family's first few years of their grief, Madison & Susan came to realize the lack of support available for grieving children, youth and families in our community.

Nick’s life, death, and legacy has been a driving force in the establishment of The Nightingale Centre, and the story of this family still fuels the mission and vision of our Centre today.✨

Sometimes glimmers appear in the form of partnership and possibility. This week, we're celebrating a beautiful collaboration that is helping us expand grief support across our community.

In addition to the Grow in Grief Kits for Children, Youth and Professionals launched in 2025, Nightingale's Grow in Grief Kits for Families are now available at (Main Library & Westminster Square Branch). Each Kit includes activities, comfort items, mindful breathing cards, and resources designed to help families understand and process grief as a unit.

In grief, small acts of kindness can create moments of warmth and safety. This partnership is one of those moments: a glimmer that reminds us that supportive and compassionate resources are within reach.

We're grateful to Guelph Public Library for their commitment to our vision of a community where no child or family grieves alone. 🤍

Starting January 13, Grief In Common is a grief support group program for young adults (19-30). Both new and returning participants are welcome at all of our group programs.

Our promise ✨
Grief support that dare we say it, doesn't suck. This group will take place over a shared meal together. You'll be given the space and opportunity to share as much or as little of your grief with other people around your age who have also experienced a significant loss.

Our hope ✨
You'll create meaningful friendships and forward motion in your life, whatever that looks like for you in this season.

Running from January 13—March 3, Grief In Common is offered at NO cost to participants. Register at our link in bio or call 519-265-9594. 🕊️

Introducing Glimmers✨

In grief, there are so many big and small triggers. The world without our loved ones feels new and uncertain, and oftentimes it feels like this pain is all we notice. Glimmers can often be thought of as a counterpoint to these feelings. Finding glimmers in grief can help us restore a belief that there are still moments and things in our world that are warm, safe, calm and nurturing.

Moving forward, we'll be sharing glimmers on a regular basis with our community as a gentle reminder that even in grief, small moments of light can still exist.

We're starting by sharing our gratitude with the participants from Nightingale’s Fall 2025 Young Adult Group who reflected on their own experiences to create & share this thoughtful resource on grief and the holidays with others.

Our Fall 2025 group programs have come to a close and our hearts are filled with gratitude. 🤍

Gratitude for the children, teenagers and parents & caregivers who have trusted in Nightingale over the last 8 weeks to hold them in their grief. Gratitude for our facilitators and volunteers who have so beautifully guided us through this fall season with compassion, care and love. Gratitude for all who have played a role in our story and allow us to continue this important and meaningful work.

As we concluded last night’s session, we gathered in a circle and each participant was invited to say the name of their person who died and/or share a story about them while simultaneously adding a bead to our community string. The rest of the group followed up each time in unison saying “We hold them in our hearts and we remember them.”

A beautiful closing ritual that silently communicated: may we find and place ourselves in less spaces that ask us to shrink our grief, and more spaces that embody what an honour it is to be trusted in the presence of our grief. 🕊

This , we're sharing a message from one of our children's group participants. During Children's Grief Awareness Month, they wrote on a postcard: "Hope Feels Like a Light in the Darkness."

That child understood something profound—that hope isn't the absence of darkness, but rather the light that pierces through it. And today, we want you to know that your acts of generosity make that light possible.

It takes an inordinate amount of strength to wake up every morning and consciously step back into a world in which someone you love is missing.

But now, because of people like you, we can meet children and families exactly where they are—in the middle of their darkness—and help them discover their own light.

No matter how big or small, your acts of kindness and generosity today will help us fulfill our promise to grieving children and families in our community that while we can’t take away their pain, we can take away any chance that their grief is carried alone.

Today, we ask you to consider giving the gift of hope to grieving children and families in our community. Can you help us?
