Why does everyone get sick during or right after midterms, exams, or important work projects? Can we do anything about it? Contrary to popular belief, illness after stress is not due to the body being "too tired to fight the illness." In fact, the body is engaging in a self-protective mechanism that suppresses the immune system so that all of the energy it has can go towards dealing with the stressor itself. This means when we are stressed for prolonged periods of time, our bodies are much more susceptible to illness. This is also why we have difficulty sleeping; our bodies have turned off or decreased their sleep systems to keep us on alert.
One of the most important things is to catch it early. We cannot decide to be or not to be stressed during an event. But in many cases we can help to decrease that response after or during the event. This will help to turn off the HPA axis and allow the body to return to its normal functioning. Talking to a counsellor can be a great first step and our counsellors at Chettiar are dedicated to helping you detect stress early and proving you with strategies to prevent chronic stress. Some things to consider: cool down before going to bed, don't have caffeine without food, don't over exercise, open your blinds in the morning, try and do yoga or mindfulness "snacks" during the day, find a safe physical touch (hugs, petting an animal, weighted blanket), breathing or other activities to stimulate the vagus nerve.
