Shockwave therapy uses kinetic energy to help speed along the healing of chronic and stubborn injuries such as plantar fasciitis, elbow tendonitis and other recurring injuries. The sound you can hear in the video is the shockwave machine using air pressure to move a small projectile within the shockwave head back and forth (approximately 15 times per second), transferring the kinetic energy to the area that is being treated, in this case the elbow.

Through this transfer of kinetic energy to the affected area of injury, shockwave therapy can help with pain control and speed up the bodies' natural inflammatory process that is key to healing. Shockwave therapy may be uncomfortable at first, depending on the area being treated, but most side effects go away within 12-24hrs, and most clients get complete relief of their initial symptoms after 4-6 shockwave therapy treatments!

If you would like to see if shockwave therapy is right for you contact our clinic by phone at 519-265-7343 or visit our website to book online: www.guelphrehab.com

Laser therapy is a safe and effective modality that we use in the clinic to treat acute pain, such as flare ups of osteoarthritis pain, tendonitis etc. Laser therapy can be used at multiple areas of the body, shown here is the knee joint. Most people won't feel much as the laser therapy treatment is being completed, but it can help by reducing inflammation and pain within just a few treatment sessions. Laser therapy is a great adjunct to strengthening and stretching as part of a comprehensive rehab treatment plan for many different types of injuries!

Vestibular Rehab: A key area of rehab that we focus on at GRC is vestibular rehab. The vestibular system is a key and delicate part of the nervous system, with it's main function being to help orient our head in space and help keep us balanced when moving around our environment. This system can be disrupted from any number of injuries/conditions, including: concussion, positional vertigo, inflammation of the inner ear and many more.

When we take clients through vestibular rehab, a thorough assessment with our physiotherapists will determine what the cause of the vestibular dysfunction is, and focus on areas of the vestibular system that are impacted. Seen in this video is a vestibular ocular reflex exercise, where Chris is focusing his eyes on the X as he moves his head side to side. This is why you may see sticky notes all around our clinic!

Eccentric Wrist Extension: When people have pain on the outside of their elbow, and sometimes into the forearm, it is known as "tennis elbow" or lateral epicondylitis. Tennis elbow is an injury that can occur during repetitive swinging of a tennis racket, or more commonly as a repetitive strain injury when doing activities that involve utilizing the muscles in the forearm that extend the wrist. Strengthening these muscles is key to a successful rehab of this injury. At first, most people should focus on lengthening the extensor muscles of the wrist while holding a weight, as shown in this video. Use a small weight to start!

If you are having pain related to tennis or golfer's elbow contact our clinic by phone at 519-265-7343 or visit our website to book online and let us help you! www.guelphrehab.com

Wall Squat: Using a wall and exercise ball for support as you go through a squatting motion is a great way to begin squatting exercises with minimal discomfort. Other modifications for this exercise can include using a staggered stance to offload a painful knee. This is a great exercise for overall lower extremity strengthening and even for lower back pain!

Supination/Pronation: This is a great exercise to focus on forearm/wrist strengthening. Grab a dumbbell or water bottle from one end, and focus on rotating the forearm slowly, using your thigh or arm rest for support as you go through the motion.

Chin tucks with a resistance band are a great and simple strengthening exercise that can help with general posture and neck/headache pain. This exercise targets the deep neck flexor muscle groups that help with overall posture.

Serratus Anterior Punchouts 🥊 Sometimes known as the “boxer’s muscle” because it is often overdeveloped in people who box due to its action of bringing the shoulder blade into protraction or forward, thus it is quite active during a punching motion. In many individuals with upper back and neck pain, this muscle is often inhibited due to the fact that in a seated position we are not activating this muscle against any resistance, particularly if we have rounded shoulders with our seated posture. This exercise targets the serratus anterior muscle to ensure we are activating it against the resistance of gravity, try adding a dumbbell for further resistance!

One of the most common shoulder injuries we see in the clinic are rotator cuff injuries, whether from overuse, sports injuries, or trauma to the shoulder. Rotator cuff rehab can vary quite significantly depending on the mechanism of injury, the extent of the injury, and what the client’s goals are for rehab.
