It is totally safe too have acupuncture after surgery and during cancer treatment.

The risk of infection from acupuncture is almost nil.

Compare these figures.
From 2000 to 2011 there were 239 cases of infection due to acupuncture in the entire world.

That is in 11 years!!!!

But according to the CDC, in 2022, there were 110,800 cases of infection due to surgery.

In 1 year!!!!

Comparing only 1 year to 11 years of data, you can see that the risk is so small, it is barely even a blip on the radar, and also remembering that this is a world wide statistic, meaning that in some places, standards of sanitation and disinfection may not be as high as here in Canada.

So please don't let anyone scare you away from a supportive therapy that can help you due to outdated attitudes and opinions that are not based in facts.

Remember that only a few years ago, doctors told patients with joint replacements that they had to take antibiotics in order to have their teeth cleaned because they could get an infection. We have since learned that this is completely unnesscary.

One of my patients went to donate blood and was asked if she had gotten acupuncture and if the needles were single-use.

I'm shocked that this would be questioned, but apparently it is.

As registered acupuncturists, we are held to the same standards as other health professionals, and the needles we use are sterilized, sealed, and are ALWAYS single-use.
