The Village of Riverside Glen is happy to share a residents dream coming true, having her art and ASL book published!
MY FIRST LIBRARY BOOK
My name is Elizabeth Hurlbut,
I'm a Cartoonist, Graphic Artist, and Creative Writer who loves American Sign Language. In 2013, following the advice of my deaf ASL instructor, Charlie McKelvey, I spent eight years creating My ASL Dictionary, a cartoon-illustrated American Sign Language Dictionary, published by Tellwell Publishing on December 03, 2021.
The Staff of Schlegel Villages' The Village of Riverside Glen were helpful in the book's construction, offering advice, feedback, and creative suggestions. My friend and Staff member Shannon Stuart introduced me to her mother, who took me on a trip to a Writer's Workshop in Eden Mills. At the Workshop, I met children's author Kathleen Gauer, who liked my artwork and pointed out the significant benefits of getting a published book into a library.
Next came the Guelph Library, Westminster Branch. During the book's production, I would stop off at the branch to show my latest pages of ASL illustrations. After telling the library staff of my plans to finish an ASL Dictionary, they were all supportive, assuring me that when the book was published, they would add it to the Library Catalog. After years of working with my Publisher and the Library, I was finally able to get my ebook into the Draft2Digital database.
With all the pieces in place, the Guelph Library can now add my Canadian Content to its catalog. Every author dreams to see their work published, but to see their book in a library is the icing on the cake.
