🧠 Concussion injuries: Understanding the Whole-Body Impact...

Neck, spine, jaw, and shoulder injuries often occur alongside a concussion — especially after a fall, car accident, or sports impact. These injuries can overlap with and heighten concussion symptoms, contributing to ongoing issues like headache, dizziness, balance changes, visual strain, sleep discomfort, and mental fatigue.

That’s why effective recovery requires a plan that looks at the whole picture — not just the head. Healthcare providers with specialized training in concussion management are equipped to assess and address the multiple factors contributing to the full range of symptoms.

💡 Research shows:

Early assessment and targeted, multimodal rehabilitation can speed recovery and reduce symptoms. Exercises are tailored to each patient and focus on eye-head coordination, balance, spatial awareness, postural training and aerobic exercise.

Key Takeaway:

Persistent dizziness or balance issues aren’t just “in your head”—they’re a treatable part of concussion recovery.

🧠 Did You Know?

Up to 70% of people experience sleep difficulties after a concussion. Sleep can be disrupted by a combination of internal brain changes and external factors:

Internal: neurometabolic and physiological changes in the brain that affect sleep regulation

External: pain and headaches, stress and mood changes, or altered daily routines

💡 Tips to Improve Sleep After Concussion:

Maintain a consistent sleep schedule

Keep your bedroom dark, quiet, and cool

Limit screens and bright lights before bed

Avoid caffeine and heavy meals close to bedtime

Consult a Shift-Trained Provider if sleep problems persist

Key Takeaway: Good sleep isn’t just rest—it’s essential for brain recovery. Addressing both internal and external factors can make a real difference in your recovery timeline.

Concussion FAQ

Q: Can you tell if I have a concussion with a CT or MRI scan?

A: No. Standard brain imaging often appears normal after a concussion.

Why:
Concussions are functional brain injuries. They affect how your brain works, not necessarily how it looks on standard scans.

What matters:
- A thorough clinical assessment by a trained healthcare provider
- Symptom monitoring (headache, dizziness, fatigue, light/noise sensitivity)
- Guided rehabilitation and safe return-to-activity plans

Key Takeaway:
Even if a scan looks “normal,” persistent symptoms should never be ignored. Early recognition and care are essential for safe recovery.

🧠 Myth or Fact?

“Wearing a helmet prevents concussion.”

❌ Myth: While helmets are essential for preventing severe head injuries like skull fractures or brain bleeds, no helmet can completely prevent a concussion.

✅ Fact: Modern helmets may reduce brain strain under certain situations, potentially lowering the severity of injury in some cases — but the literature is mixed, and ultimately helmets can’t stop all concussions. The brain can still move rapidly within the skull during an impact, causing neural tissues to shift and sustain injury.

Key takeaway:
Always wear a helmet for safety — it plays a major role in reducing the severity of head injuries. But knowing the signs of concussion and getting early assessment and care is what truly protects brain health.

We still occasionally hear of schools and families who believe a student should stay home until every concussion symptom is gone.

Research now shows there’s a better way:

Start Gradual—Not Prolonged Rest
• Begin with 24–48 hours of relative rest, then add school activities step-by-step as symptoms allow.
• Aim for full return to the classroom before full return to sports.

Provide Flexible Academic Supports
• Temporary help might include shorter school days, a lighter workload, extended deadlines, rest breaks, or quiet spaces for light and noise sensitivity.
• These supports are tailored to the student’s symptoms and scaled back as recovery progresses.

Use a Team Approach
• Families, educators, healthcare providers, and school staff should communicate regularly.
• A medical note can help schools activate accommodations quickly.

Monitor and Adjust
• Regular check-ins track symptoms and academic progress so supports can be updated as needed.

Key Takeaway:
An early, supported return to class leads to a safer, faster recovery than staying home until a student feels “100 percent.”

Our Story

Shift Concussion Management is a widely recognized education platform dedicated to raising the standard of care for concussion rehabilitation. Shift offers training to Health Care Practitioners and Physicians on assessment and management strategies, based on the most current and evidence-based literature and clinical expertise.

What started as a small introductory course in Ontario, Canada, has now gained nation and world-wide attention, and we are thrilled to have the opportunity for international expansion. The core value of our company is rooted in the quality of patient care and we feel this is pivotal in what makes our approach to post-concussion management successful. The structure of our program is based around a multifaceted concept, with several important pillars for the complete management of concussion: education, interdisciplinary collaboration, objective assessment markers, and individualized rehabilitation strategies. By helping clinicians develop critical thinking skills through interactive and engaging case reviews, we encourage an approach to concussion management that eliminates reliance on a set “protocol”, allowing the clinician to take their knowledge and treat the patient as a whole with individualized care strategies. Through the growth and expansion of our program, our education model has evolved to encompass two streams of training: Level 1 and Level 2.

Shift wholeheartedly believes that with the right education and management strategies in place, we can deliver successful patient outcomes to all individuals following concussion injuries. We look forward to having the opportunity to engage and introduce Clinicians and patients to our approach.
