My name is Ryan (he/him) and I am a counselling intern completing my Master of Arts degree in Counselling Psychology through Yorkville University. I will be seeing clients under the supervision of Amy Mackenzie, a Registered Counselling Therapist who has been in clinical practice for 10 years. Currently, I am offering individual and couples therapy sessions in-person and online. In my sessions, I want clients to feel truly listened to. Therapy, in my view, is a space for a client to experience empathetic and genuine attention which may be rarely found in everyday life. To encourage this space, my main approach is a person-centered, one that focuses on the client and that believes you are the expert on your own life. I also use the biopsychosocial model, as it seems that our issues with our mental health tend to be connected to multiple aspects of our lives and not usually one singular area. One significant protector of our mental wellbeing is our sense of meaning, and I also use some logotherapy techniques to help clients discover what is meaningful to them and build resilience. I will also be incorporating some Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT)-based elements into sessions when appropriate. ACT can be described as learning ways to reduce the impact of unhelpful thoughts and difficult feelings on values-driven behaviour. Whether mental health problems are new to you or something you know quite well, they can be difficult to manage on your own. However, if you are willing to reach out for help, you won’t be alone. We will work through things together.
