Do you have strengthening exercises in your fitness routine? If not, here’s why you may want to think of adding it.

😲WHY: After the age of 30 we lose 1-2% of muscle mass per year (10-20% per decade)!! This can lead to weakness, decreased mobility and an increased risk of falls and fractures.

💪THE GOOD NEWS: Although this may sound scary, we CAN combat the effects of aging by staying ACTIVE. Adding strengthening exercises to your daily routine can help maintain your muscle mass and keep you doing the activities you love!

Strength training is for everyone and can mean many different things not just lifting heavy weights at the gym. Let us help get your started with a strengthening program designed for you!

Think falling “only happens to old people”? 🛑 Think again.

Every year, more than 1 in 3 Canadians over 65 take a tumble — and half of those falls lead to serious injuries that can threaten mobility, independence, and quality of life. 🤕

But here’s the good news: over 90% of falls are preventable when you spot your risk factors early and make smart (sometimes simple) changes.

From poor balance and weak muscles to rug tripping hazards and dim lighting — falls usually result from a mix of body + environment problems.

If you want to stay upright and independent, this article breaks down what actually puts you at risk — and what you can do about it. Think of it as fall prevention 101, no matter your age.

👉 Read it. Share it with someone you care about. And maybe rearrange that pile of stuff by the stairs. 😉

Physiotherapy for elderly adults is important for rehabilitation after these injuries, but are there ways we can prevent them before they happen?

Balance is extremely important for the activities we do every day - including walking, putting on shoes and even getting dressed in the morning. Balance requires that several different body systems (visual, vestibular, muscular and proprioceptive) all work together. This is why it’s much harder to balance in a dark room or when our eyes are closed!

The best way to boost your balance is to practice working on your balance! Here are a few of our favourite balance exercises to get you started:

1️⃣ Single Leg Stand
In front of a countertop, shift your weight on one leg, lift the opposite leg and hold for as long as you can. Start with holding on to the counter and slowly let go. Focus on control and don’t let yourself sway. Work up to 30 seconds without holding on or readjusting.

2️⃣ Tandem Stance
Standing beside a countertop, put one foot in front of the other like you are walking on a tightrope. Try to hold this position for 15 seconds and then switch the position of your feet. Make sure you feel steady and you do not sway out of control. Hold onto a sturdy surface if needed!

🌟 Want a bit more of a challenge? 🌟 Close your eyes or stand on a soft surface like a pillow. Look side to side. (Make sure you are in an open space and feel steady before trying this!)

Sharing Our Story

Zoomers focuses on providing health services (physiotherapy, massage therapy, occupational therapy) and fitness classes tailored to Halifax’s 50+ population.

Led by Laura Lundquist, a physiotherapist who has worked in orthopedic and sport physiotherapy for 15 years. As she helped her clients recover from injury, she became passionate about ensuring people are able to “LIVE THE LIFE THEY LOVE”. This enthusiasm for healthy living grew into a real interest in healthy active aging.

Laura identified a need for services for adults looking to continue a physically active lifestyle despite new diagnoses or injuries. This is what inspired her to open Zoomers Physiotherapy and Health Solutions in early 2018.

We encourage you to visit us any time for a tour of our warm, friendly and relaxed environment - we would love for you to become part of our community!
