Northwood - Live More

Northwood - Live More We are the largest not-for-profit continuing care organization in Atlantic Canada.

Northwood was created in 1962 as a way to provide help to seniors that were living in poverty. For some, it is a place to live but we also provide at-home solutions to help people age well in the community. Northwood has locations in Halifax and Bedford and provides homecare throughout the Halifax Regional Municipality and to some parts of Hants County. We have over 1,500 staff, 600 volunteers and over 5,000 clients at our locations and throughout the province.

Northwood CEO Charbel Daniel joins host Vincent Van den Brink of Breakhouse Inc. to discuss how leadership, culture, and design thinking can transform continuing care.

From his beginnings in physics and paramedicine to leading Atlantic Canada’s largest not-for-profit in senior care, Charbel shares how empathy, first-principle thinking, and thoughtful design can help us add life to years—not just years to life.

Together, they explore how reimagining the design of buildings, systems, and values can redefine aging in community and build workplaces where compassion drives performance.

November is Osteoporosis Month

Osteoporosis Canada’s campaign theme this year is “Break Myths. Not Bones.” It’s time to challenge the myths surrounding osteoporosis and take real steps toward prevention and early detection.

Osteoporosis affects over 2 million Canadians, yet many still underestimate its impact until a fracture occurs. Together, we can change that through awareness, education, and action.

November is Fall Prevention Month — a time to raise awareness and take action to keep older adults safe and independent.

Falls are the leading cause of injury among older adults in Canada:
• 20–30% experience at least one fall each year
• Over 30% of those hospitalized for a fall transition to long-term care
• Falls account for 85% of injury-related hospitalizations in older adults

Together, we can help reduce the risk. Learn more and take action at fallpreventionmonth.ca

It’s National Pain Awareness Week.

Chronic pain can severely impact a person's ability to accomplish daily activities, manage basic functioning and maintain relationships.

Seniors are disproportionately affected by chronic pain and face unique barriers to accessing care.
Implementing Government of Canada's Healthy Canadians Action Plan for Pain will help provide equitable access to pain care for seniors.

November is Diabetes Awareness Month — a time to replace myths with understanding.

A recent national survey from Diabetes Canada revealed that:
• 48% of Canadians believe diabetes is caused by eating too much sugar
• 61% link it to lifestyle or diet choices
• More than half believe diabetes limits a person’s ability to do certain jobs

These misconceptions contribute to stigma — but knowledge can change that. The truth is that diabetes is a complex condition influenced by genetics, family history, ethnicity, and environmental factors. Managing it is a 24/7 commitment, with no days off.

At Northwood, we’re dedicated to promoting awareness, reducing stigma, and supporting those living with diabetes every day.

"I have learned so much and have enjoyed being part of the community and helping others to have a fulfilled day and respite for caregivers for much needed self care and rest. I work with an amazing team and going to work makes me smile. It’s like family. Thankful for that." Connie Lennon, Program Worker.

Today, on World Stroke Day, we’re joining the global call to raise awareness about stroke prevention and the importance of recognizing the signs early.

In Canada, a stroke occurs approximately every five minutes, and one in four Canadians is expected to experience one in their lifetime. Stroke remains the third leading cause of death and the leading cause of adult disability — but up to 90% of strokes can be prevented through healthy lifestyle choices and managing risk factors like high blood pressure, diet, and smoking.

Knowing the signs can save a life.

Remember FAST:
F – Face: Is it drooping?
A – Arms: Can you raise both?
S – Speech: Is it slurred or jumbled?
T – Time: Time to call 911 immediately.

Every second counts. Let’s spread the word and protect our province through awareness and quick action.
