Northwood - Live More

Northwood - Live More We are the largest not-for-profit continuing care organization in Atlantic Canada.

Northwood was created in 1962 as a way to provide help to seniors that were living in poverty. For some, it is a place to live but we also provide at-home solutions to help people age well in the community. Northwood has locations in Halifax and Bedford and provides homecare throughout the Halifax Regional Municipality and to some parts of Hants County. We have over 1,500 staff, 600 volunteers and over 5,000 clients at our locations and throughout the province.

📣 Have you created something at home that makes life easier, safer, or more comfortable for a care recipient with dementia?

A research team from NSCAD, Dalhousie and the Alzheimer Society is looking to learn about practical, home-made solutions that support people living with dementia.

The project has two phases:

Phase 1: Team members will collect and study these homegrown ideas to understand what works and why.

Phase 2: Product-development specialists will collaborate with the community to refine these ideas into practical, safe solutions that others can use.

A small act of kindness travelled hundreds of miles — and is about to brighten the holidays for our residents.

What started with one young relative in Winnipeg, Manitoba has grown into entire classrooms sending handmade cards to Northwood.

This is what connection looks like.

Northwood joins World Health Organization (WHO) and their partners worldwide to commemorate the International Day of Persons with Disabilities.

This year, the focus is on inclusive health financing and the impact it has on access to care, dignity, and overall well-being. With 1.3 billion persons with disabilities worldwide, achieving health for all means ensuring that financial barriers never stand in the way of essential services, treatments, or supports.

At Northwood, we believe strong, inclusive systems benefit everyone. When health financing considers accessibility, affordability, and equity, communities become healthier, families feel supported, and no one is left behind.

This Giving Tuesday, you can help brighten the holidays for seniors who may be feeling alone.

Each year, Mary Anne hosts her own “Open Room,” decorating her space and welcoming friends in for treats, conversation, and Christmas cheer. It’s her way of turning one room into a place of connection and hope.

“Just because I live in one room,” she says, “doesn’t mean I can’t welcome my friends in.”

Your gift today helps create more moments like this through recreation programs, music therapy, community events, special outings, and mental wellness supports.

Together, we can combat loneliness and help residents feel seen, valued, and connected.
