Cupping is a great additional tool to have as a massage therapist. It helps blend old world healing practice into today’s practice. For your patients, it can help increase circulation, decrease fascial restrictions, increase range of motion and many other benefits all with minimal effort from you as a therapist. As a therapist, it is a great tool for self-healing and maintenance. Cupping is a technique whereby a vacuum (negative pressure) is created in a cup, drawing the skin (fascia) up into the cup and separating the layers of fascia. The vacuum effect draws new blood to the area which is now able to flow between the separated layers of fascia providing circulation to areas that may have been adhered and it will also help to flush any stagnation that may have been present. Annis Downey, RMT and Pam Wilson, RMT have been practicing cupping massage therapy since 2010.
