Today a client asked me for a sip of water during her treatment, because she had an itch in her throat. Was I annoyed to have to pause the treatment to get her water? No, I was genuinely excited that she vocalized what her body needed!
We live in a world where overriding our body’s needs and boundaries is not only acceptable but actually celebrated. From a young age, we are conditioned to sit still when we want to move, suppress the noises of normal bodily functions, push our bodies with extreme forms of exercise, and continue to work when we’re exhausted or sick. I’m here to point out how NOT okay this is. These ruptures of our body’s boundaries have very real impacts on our nervous system, and I regularly see the effects in my clinic (and in my own life).
Being in my clinic space is the perfect opportunity to begin to notice, and vocalize what your body needs. Is my pressure 7% too much? 10% too little? Is the music a little too loud, or not the right vibe? Do you feel like your body might like an extra pillow under your knees? I WANT to hear about it! My space is a respite from adhering to the conditioning that you must override your needs in the name of being polite/acceptable/productive. Let’s work together to honour your body so your nervous system gets the message that it is safe.

Update: Rooted Elm Therapeutic Massage is now Rooted Elm Therapeutics!
Why the change? Because I’m changing, and my business is an extension of me.
I am feeling the need to be more honest in this space… So here we go. I like being an RMT and I think massage is great. (I also like to think I’m pretty good at it.) It’s amazing to have a job that allows me to directly improve other humans’ health and wellbeing on a daily basis. I am ever grateful for that! AND, massage is not my passion. Somatics are my passion. I recently had a session with a somatic practitioner who described learning somatics as “coming home” and I felt it in my bones, because this has also been my experience. It’s hard to explain in words the magic, and weirdness, that is somatics, probably because it can’t be fully described, it can only be felt. What I can explain is that I feel called to this work in a deep way, a way that makes me equal parts excited and nervous.
So what does this mean for my massage therapy practice? For now it means mostly business as usual. I am still in training to become a Somatic Experiencing practitioner, and I won’t be finished until 2025. I’ve been weaving some somatic work into treatments with a few clients (with consent of course!), but I understand it’s not everyone’s thing and am happy to continue providing “regular” massage. And, I will be starting to share more about somatics here, which is my way of being more honest about who I am and where I’m at.
Always open to questions - feel free to ask!

Wishing you all a beautiful New Year! Thank you for trusting me with your massage therapy care in 2023.
My role is one of facilitator, not healer. In 2023 it was a privilege to witness many moments of clients stepping into gentler relationship with their body. Learning more about how to facilitate this shift is what I’m most excited about for 2024!
PS - if the Holidays are a hard or complicated time for you, know that you’re not alone. High-five for making it through 💕

A message to body workers of all types: Your own nervous system health is the greatest “credential” you can hold. This is what I’ve discovered in my 6+ years of being a student of massage therapy (and of people in general).
Yes, education is necessary and important. But how you are with a client - your ability to be present - is, in my opinion, far more valuable than any continuing education course you could take.
(Thank you to .ofbeing for inspiring this post with her beautiful content)

New Movement-Based Offering: Restore Your Core!
This post is long overdue, and I thank you for your patience. In May, I became the first certified Restore Your Core (RYC)Teacher in Atlantic Canada. I am super excited to continue using what I learned to help you! This training was the real deal - I might love RYC even more than barefoot massage, and that’s saying a lot.
RYC is a movement-based program that helps optimise core and pelvic floor functioning from a full-body approach. It was initially developed by the amazing to help postpartum women experiencing issues such as diastasis recti and stress incontinence. However, I’ve come to realize it can be helpful for people of all genders who experience symptoms of pelvic floor dysfunction, or who have chronic back or hip pain. It can also help anyone who is simply looking to improve alignment or movement patterns.
Beginning in September, I will be offering stand-alone RYC sessions (NOT eligible for insurance billing under massage), as well as combined massage/RYC session (eligible for insurance). These can now be booked online!
In a typical session, we assess fundamental patterns such as breathing, core engagement strategy, spinal/pelvic mobility, and preferred postures. You’ll learn simple exercises to help expand your movement vocabulary, and help re-pattern any habits that may be contributing to pain or dysfunction.
Depending on your needs and preferences, we can do a one-off session, or work together for multiple sessions.
If you have any questions about RYC and whether it’s right for you, please contact me!

My September + October schedule is now available for online booking!
As always, I recommend getting in quick, particularly if you’re looking for weekend or evening appointments.
Those of you who find it tricky to to book in advance (totally understandable!) may be happy to hear that I will be trialing a new system to allow for short-notice bookings. This fall, I will reserve 1-2 appointment times per week for clients who experience injuries, or who don’t know their schedule in advance. The appointment times will vary week-to-week, and can be booked by emailing me.
Hopefully this system will make my services more accessible!
Thank you for your continued support! I appreciate you.

Let’s talk about cancellations!
Almost every week, I have multiple cancellations. Although I am able to fill some of them, it can require a lot of extra work, often on my days “off”. It’s not uncommon that I am unable to fill them. Sometimes I fill one, only to have another pop up literally 5 minutes later! I know from speaking with my colleagues that this is an industry wide problem that we all deal with, to varying degrees. Some months are worse than others, and I have lost up to one-third of my monthly income as a result.
One of the reasons I am able to provide such high quality treatments is because I honour my energy budget and don’t overfill my schedule. This means that I don’t have much of a buffer, and every unfilled cancellation affects me.
To help deal with this problem, I am changing my cancellation policy from 24 to 48 hours, effective June 1st. Clients who cancel with less than 48 hours notice will be charged the full fee for the session.
Thank you for treating your RMT with respect so they can thrive while doing what they love!

Dear Clients, I know it seems early to be talking about summer scheduling, but here we are!
I will be away from the clinic for the month of July, and will have reduced availability in August.
With only a handful of appointments remaining for May, and June being over half booked, now is the time to book your pre-summer appointments! Please remember that the waitlist is an excellent option if you can’t find an opening at a time that works for you.
As always, please get in touch with any questions. Thank you so much for supporting my business!
