Cognitive Health and Recovery Research Lab

Cognitive Health and Recovery Research Lab At Dalhousie University, Dr. Gail Eskes is developing a Cognitive Repair Kit to provide new treatmen TeamSpace Canada, Inc.

Brain function is critical to all we do – it underlies our physical abilities as well as our mental processes that allow us to think, remember, multi-task and problem solve. Our work concerns how changes to the brain during normal aging or after injury or disease affect attention and memory in order to develop new interventions to help. Right now, we are developing a Cognitive Repair Kit, which is a suite of computer “brain training” exercises to target attention and working memory problems. These exercises are built upon current knowledge of how the brain works, and how it changes with different experiences. We are putting this together to create game-like exercises that adapt to the level of each individual, provide feedback, and make it fun to “take your medicine”. Ultimately, we hope that these exercises will enhance daily living and improve quality of life. Our research laboratory is greatly indebted to many individuals, different organizations and groups. We collaborate with researchers in a variety of disciplines, including Kinesiology, Psychology, Psychiatry, Neurology, Physiotherapy, and Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation. provides the game software programming expertise. In addition, we could not continue to operate without the volunteer spirit of the many individuals who have participated in our studies. Thanks to the following groups for providing support in recruitment for our many studies:

Acute Stroke Team, Halifax Infirmary
Rehabilitation Team, Nova Scotia Rehabilitation Centre
Dartmouth Stroke Club

Our research is supported by the following agencies:

Canadian Institutes for Health Research
Heart and Stroke Foundation of Nova Scotia
Parkinson Society of Canada
Nova Scotia Health Research Foundation
Capital Health Research Fund
Dalhousie Medical Research Foundation
Dalhousie Psychiatry Research Fund

Play Online Games for Research

We are studying how different methods of mental practice might improve working memory. The study takes place online, over the course of 5 consecutive days, and should take a total of 4 hours. Participants will be asked to answer some basic demographic questions and then complete some online, game-like tasks. The tasks will require you to remember and identify objects and make decisions about them. Compensation is available. Interested people aged 18 years and older should contact
varia@dal.ca (or visit https://redcap.its.dal.ca/surveys/?s=E87JWLCKXAKKL893) for more information on how to participate.

Amid the growing concerns over Novel Coronavirus (COVID‑19) we wanted to provide an update to the community. Based on recent developments with respect to social distancing, Dalhousie University has made the decision to suspend all campus-based research operations until further notice. During this difficult time, our highest priority is the safety and well-being of our researchers, research staff, trainees and participants. We are currently looking at options for moving some of our research online and will provide updates as things progress.

In the spirit of doing our share to contain the virus, please follow the PHA recommendations:
1. Social distance - decrease close contact with others as much as you can (recommended distance is 6 feet), and use Skype, etc. for any meetings if you can. We will hold lab meetings online or cancel, depending upon need.
2. Wash your hands frequently with soap & water for 20 sec and dry thoroughly (there is a cute website - washyourlyrics.com - that will turn your favorite song into a 20 sec version)
3. Avoid touching your face, eyes, nose, mouth
4. Cough into your elbow or cover with tissue and throw tissue away
5. Wipe down all frequently touched surfaces, including keyboards, desktops, door handles , etc.
6. Try to practice other healthy behaviours - get lots of sleep, drink lots of fluids, eat well and get some exercise, so you can fight any viruses you might get
7. If you feel sick, have a fever, cough, chills, etc. you should call 811.

Be sure to also take care of your mental health as well, some suggestions are to make daily social connection dates (Skype, FaceTime..), practice meditation, positive self talk, set daily goals and structure your routine.

The latest update including recommendations for social distancing and for those who need to self- quarantine/isolate can be found at: https://novascotia.ca/news/release/?id=20200315002

Be safe everyone!
