When shopping for toys and games, it's important to pay attention to the age recommendation labels. These guidelines aren’t just about developmental stages — they’re also about safety. Even if your child seems “past the stage” of putting things in their mouth, it’s still safest to keep small parts away until they’re truly ready.

There are three main types of baby gates, each intended to be used in certain situations or locations.

Hardware-mounted or screw-in gates: Use this type of gate at the top of stairs. It is anchored into the wall and cannot become loose or displaced if a child leans, falls, or pushes against it.

Pressure-mounted gates: Use this type of gate for flat areas and the bottom of stairs.

Gates for irregular areas: Use specialized or elongated gates for areas like fireplaces, woodstoves, exercise equipment, or other potentially dangerous areas that the child should not have access to.

It is important to always read the manufacturer’s instructions and safety warnings to ensure proper installation and use of the baby gate. To learn more about baby gates, steps for installation, and other safety consideration, refer to Safety-At-Home: Child Prevention Guide, A Resource for Families developed by Child Safety Link at https://childsafetylink.ca/fall-toolkit.
