✨What helps my ADHD brain focus✨

🍬Chewing something like gum, candy, or chips gives me sensory input that helps my brain stay on task. Research shows oral stimulation activates the prefrontal cortex, which supports focus and impulse control. It’s like giving your brain a gentle cue to wake up and regulate.

🎶Background noise such as music or a familiar show helps because silence can actually be overstimulating for an ADHD brain. Steady, predictable sound provides an anchor for attention and reduces the mental search for input.

🛑Breaks are essential. ADHD brains use energy differently, and attention works more like a sprint than a marathon. Taking regular pauses prevents burnout and helps maintain focus over time.

I didn’t recognize these coping tools until adulthood. If you’re a parent trying to help your neurodivergent child, know that there’s no single right way to learn. When education embraces different learning styles, kids become more confident and self-aware learners.

Never a task completed at one time, but progress is progress. 😅 (And yes, I did sweep, don’t come for me 😂)

The studio reset that took three playlists and a questionable amount of pauses.

What’s your go-to cleaning playlist or reset ritual? 🎶

In art therapy, it’s never just about making art.
Every material we choose carries intention, it reflects something about how we experience, process, and interact with the world.

Watercolour invites release. It flows where it wants, blending and merging in unpredictable ways. It asks us to loosen our grip, to trust the process, to accept that not everything can (or should) be controlled.

Acrylic is about patience and layering. It dries quickly but builds depth through persistence. It teaches us that growth takes time, that healing often happens in layers, not all at once.

Pencil represents control and structure. It allows us to edit, to correct, to start again. For some, that sense of safety and containment is what makes exploring deeper emotions possible.

In art therapy, these aren’t random choices, they’re intentional tools. Each medium interacts differently with our nervous system, emotions, and sense of self. Some days we need freedom and flow; other days we crave boundaries and order.

So next time you reach for a brush, a pencil, or a handful of clay, notice what’s pulling you in.
That choice alone might tell you something about what you need most right now.

Because in art therapy, the materials aren’t just part of the process… they’re part of the conversation.

Let’s chat labels.

There’s always mixed opinions when it comes to labels or getting a diagnosis.

For me, it’s never a clear yes or no
I always ask: what’s the goal?

Do you need confirmation?
More resources?
Or are we trying to better understand your characteristics and how your brain works?

I don’t think you need a label.
But if it helps you find clarity, community, or your most authentic self, then I see no harm. 💛
