UNPOPULAR OPINION 🧘♀️ 🕉
The world is heavy right now. We are terrified to turn on the news or open our phones for what may be waiting. We have to, as a collective, start speaking up against all of the atrocities in the world and stand together, not be divided.
Is yoga political? Absolutely and I will tell you why. Let’s go back to the very heart of of our training.
What is “ahimsa”? It is the first of the yamas, the ethical guidelines, that speaks of non-violence and non-harm. This isn’t just about our diet or only saying kind things. It is also about standing up so that there is no violence or harm against anyone, not just ourselves. It is about seeing ALL life as valuable and standing up to all forms of harm and violence. It is not just about personal change but collective liberation.
What is “satya”? it is the second of the limbs wherein you are guided to align your thoughts, speech and actions to your authentic self and your values. It is YOUR TRUTH. It is about speaking truth and standing up to the lies and false narratives.
Part of our yoga practice and our yogic ethics is to stand up against “himsa” or harm. I am not saying we stand up with violence or speak unkindly with our truth. I am just saying that we need to stand up so that there is a united world of non-violence and non-harm and we do so in a peaceful and truthful way. That is what yoga teaches us. How to both live and cultivate peace.
So often teachers are guided to be toxically positive and to stay away from bold statements but that isn’t my satya. Will I speak political things on the mat, absolutely not, but I WILL create a safe space for everyone and teach my students to stand in their truth, be grounded and find their authentic self and how to take that off of the mat. Yoga teaches us to be warriors, to take up space and to NOT be small.
So, here it is. EVERY ONE is welcome into my teaching spaces and I will ensure that all are safe and treated with kindness and compassion and I WILL speak up loudly against fascism, misogyny, racism, homophobic and transphobic hate.
