CPR (Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation) can save a life when someone’s breathing or heartbeat has stopped. If a person collapses and isn’t responding, call emergency services right away and start CPR if you’re trained (or follow dispatcher instructions). Push hard and fast in the center of the chest—steady compressions help keep blood flowing to the brain until help arrives. If an AED (defibrillator) is available, use it as soon as possible and follow the voice prompts. Learning CPR is a simple skill that can make an extraordinary difference.

How BLS Training in Mississauga Helped Our Participants Save a Life

Learning life-saving skills in our course

Our Basic Life Support for Healthcare Providers (BLS HCP) course in Mississauga is a four-hour program designed to build confidence in life‑saving skills. The class is recognised by the Canadian Red Cross and meets provincial workplace standards. Participants learn high‑quality CPR for adults, children and infants, how to use an automated external defibrillator (AED) for rapid defibrillation, team response dynamics, airway management and oxygen therapy, and rapid patient assessment. Training takes place at Suite 206, 39 Dundas St E, Mississauga, ON L5A 1V9 and is offered in small class sizes to maximise hands‑on practice.

A real-life rescue

Shortly after completing the course, two participants — Maria, a nurse, and Kevin, a medical assistant — were sitting at a local cafe when a man suddenly collapsed outside. Remembering their training, they performed a rapid assessment and discovered he was unresponsive and not breathing. Maria started high‑quality chest compressions, while Kevin asked a bystander to call 911 and fetch the cafe’s AED. When the AED arrived, they attached the pads and followed its prompts. They continued cycles of compressions and defibrillation until paramedics arrived.

Their calm teamwork reflected the practical drills they had mastered in class: taking turns delivering compressions to minimise fatigue, using the AED confidently and coordinating with bystanders. By the time professionals took over, the man had regained a pulse. Days later he left hospital with no neurological damage.

Why training matters

Maria and Kevin later said that without the course they wouldn’t have had the confidence to act. The BLS program taught them not only the mechanics of CPR and AED use but also the importance of team response dynamics and rapid patient assessment. Because class sizes are kept small and the training is hands‑on, participants develop the muscle memory needed to respond under pressure. The course also provides a one‑year digital certificate, with recertification available at a reduced cost.

Severe bleeding can be fatal in minutes—act fast. Call emergency services. Put on gloves if available. Press hard with clean cloth or gauze; don’t lift to check. If soaking, add layers and keep pressure. For deep wounds, pack gauze into the wound and press. On limbs with life-threatening bleeding, apply a tourniquet 2–3 in above the wound (not on joints), tighten until bleeding stops; note the time. Keep them warm. Get training.
