Happy International Self-Care Day! Self-care means taking time to do things that you enjoy most or that make you feel better. It can include activities you normally do, like reading a book or trying something new like meditation. Even seeing a movie with a friend can be a form of self-care.

Consider trying some of these self-care activities:

• Journaling. Writing things down can help get them out of your head.
• Eating well. Try not to skip meals, choose nutritious foods, and drink eight glasses of water daily.
• Exercising regularly. Walking your dog, taking a bike ride, or trying a new fitness app all count!

Every summer, too many people are killed or injured in preventable water-related accidents. Keep your family safe at the beach, pool, and cottage this season with these tips:
• Always watch children actively, even if they can swim
• Avoid diving in home pools; enter feet first
• Be cautious about swimming in currents – even strong swimmers can get caught up

Swimming skills alone aren’t always enough to keep you safe, or to save a life. Learn more about water safety from the Canadian Red Cross:

Summer vacation is calling! But if you’re headed on a far-flung holiday, you should make sure you’re up to date on your travel vaccines.

Depending on where you are travelling, you could be at risk for many vaccine preventable illnesses. For many places, the immunizations you might need could include protection for hepatitis A, travellers’ diarrhea, and meningitis.

It’s Canada Day weekend and we’re all ready to celebrate!

If your family loves fireworks, it’s best to leave the big displays to the experts. Even using hand-held sparklers in your backyard comes with some dangers, so it’s important to keep these three safety tips in mind:

1/ Keep sparklers away from young kids. They burn extremely hot and if not handled correctly, can ignite clothing, and cause severe burns.
2/ Older children should handle sparklers carefully, under close adult supervision.
3/ Sparklers stay hot for several minutes after they go out. Keep a bucket of water nearby to drop them in when everyone is finished.

If your bare legs have ever brushed by poison ivy during a walk in the woods, you’ll know it! Contact with any part of the plant can cause a red, itchy rash.

The good news is that the rash will go away on its own, but it can be uncomfortable. Here are some steps you can take to control the itching:
• Apply an over-the-counter hydrocortisone cream or ointment.
• Take an oral antihistamine to calm the reaction.
• Soak the area in a cool bath with baking soda or oatmeal.

Stop by the pharmacy to pick up everything you will need and to ask our pharmacist for advice on what else you can do to treat a poison ivy rash at home.

Your emergency car kit should include:
• Individual water bottles
• Non-perishable and heat resistant snacks (think granola bars and trail mix)
• Insect repellent
• Sunscreen

A cramp happens when a muscle suddenly contracts and doesn’t relax. Toe cramps are usually harmless (often caused by dehydration or a mineral deficiency), but they can be painful.

Try these simple home remedies for toe cramps:
• Apply a warm towel or heating pad to your foot to help muscles relax.
• When you’re exercising, drink water and replenish your electrolytes (with coconut water, milk, fruit, a veggie smoothie or a sports drink) if you are sweating heavily.
• Stretch your feet. Think toe raises, curls, flexing and pointing.

Changes in diet, lack of sleep, stress, and some medications (including certain antidepressants, treatments for incontinence, and allergies) can all cause constipation. It’s an issue that most people deal with at some point, and one that becomes more common as we age.

For occasional constipation, talk with our pharmacist who can recommend dietary and other lifestyle changes, as well as over-the-counter treatments. If you are experiencing problems often, our pharmacist can also advise on when you should speak with your doctor.

Vaccines play an important role in keeping you and your family healthy, but you may be confused by misinformation you’ve read about immunization. For example:

Myth: Vaccines aren’t safe.
Fact: Health Canada regulates the safety and effectiveness of vaccines and ensures they go through a series of rigorous steps before they are approved for use. It can take 10 years to develop and approve a new vaccine, and public health authorities continue to monitor vaccines, even after they are in use.
